It is with regret that we must announce that the keys of the following rad
io amateurs have gone silent. Roy Newman, ZS2RN on 22 August 2021; Louis
Spadavecchia, ZS6CEV during 2021; Stef Terblanche, ZS4AX/6 on 14 Marc
h 2022; Herman Rothenberg, ZS6JH on 29 March 2022 and Johan van Tonder
, ZS6TY on 30 March 2022
Johan, ZS6TY lost the battle against cancer. He grew up in the East Rand
Radio Club alongside his brother Andre, ZS6HE, his father being Van v
an Tonder (SK). Having moved to Klerksdorp Johan was fond of on the air ac tivities such as contests, HABEX and BACAR. He was an Honorary Member of
the Mooirivier ARC. We extend our sincere condolences to his daughter Ani
ne, son Cobus and his brother Andre, ZS6HE.
We also extend our sincere condolences to Colin Rothenberg and to the fami
lies and friends of the other radio amateurs.

THE SARL TAKING AMATEUR RADIO IN THE DIGITAL AGE SYMPOSIUM THIS SATURDAY
The Taking Amateur Radio in to the Digital Era Symposium will take place a
t 09:00 on Saturday 9 April 2022 on the BlueJeans platform. Following the
opening address by the SARL President, Nico van Rensburg, ZS6QL, Do
minic White of Orange Cyberdefense will deliver the keynote address entitl
ed "Why Radio Amateurs should avoid encryption." Then Sylv
ain Azarian, F4GKR, President IARU Region 1 will present "SDR Applicat
ions for Amateur Radio: How do they work?" followed by Cor Rademeyer, ZS
6CR, with detecting RF propagation disturbances by analysing GPS positio
n data.
After a virtual coffee break, Brian Jacobs, ZS6YZ, will discuss the
SARL second generation beacon programme and Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS
6AKV, poses the question, So you have copied a distant two metre beaco
n. What now? After another virtual coffee break, Anton Janovsky, ZR6AI
C, discusses building a SDR driven satellite and we have a look at the N
CDXF International Beacon Project. At the end of the Symposium a lucky dra
w will be held - you have to be connected to stand a chance of win
ning a prize!

THE SAMOC APRIL WORD SEARCH STARTED ON FRIDAY 1 APRIL
The South African Morse Operators Club April Word Search runs from 1 to 30
April in memory of Samuel Finley Breese Morse 27 April 1791 - 2 April 187
2. The idea is for operators to work sufficient stations to be able to use
one letter of each call sign to spell - You can use any amateur band exce
pt for 12, 17, 30, 60, 630 and 2 200 m. The SAMOC will also activa
te the club call sign, ZR6CW, for the month of April. Get all the info

THE AUTUMN QRP CONTEST AND THE FT4 CONTEST ON 9 APRIL
The SARL Autumn QRP Contest runs from 12:00 to 13:30 UTC on Saturday 9 Apr
il 2022 with CW and SSB activity using 5 watts or less. The first 45 minut
es are restricted to the 40 metre band and the last 45 minutes on all cont
est bands. The exchange is a realistic RS or RST report and your 6-charact
er grid locator. This is the ideal contest to set up a field station and h
ave a picnic or go fishing. Get the rules on page 70 of the Blue Book and
do not forget that photograph of your station in action. Check the Genera
l Rules for the definition of a single operator and a multi-operator.
If you operate FT8, you are ready for this exciting regional contest. Al
l you need to do is select FT4 mode in your WSJT-X software and then shake
hands with our neighbours in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Regional FT4 contest
runs from 15:30 to 17:30 UTC on Saturday 9 April. The QSOs you make durin
g the contest can be used for your All Africa Award. The Excel log sheet i
s available on the Contest page on the SARL website. The rules are on page

GET ON THE AIR FOR WORLD AMATEUR RADIO DAY
Monday 18 April is Word Amateur Radio Day. It is also a public holiday end
ing the Easter Weekend. It was on 18 April 1925 that the International Ama
teur Radio Union (IARU) was founded, during the International Radioteleg
raph Conference in Paris. That is why radio amateurs worldwide celebrate t
his day with special activities every year.
The SARL will be issuing a WARD Certificate to radio amateurs who make QSO
s on 18 April 2022 and submit a log sheet to
secretary@sarl.org.za (mailto :
secretary@sarl.org.za) . To qualify for the 2022 Certificate, there mus
t be at least a QSO with two SARL Councillors and a QSO with three Radio C
lub stations - not your own Radio Club! Get all the information on
page 7 and 8 of the April 2022 Radio ZS. Jan, ZT4T will also be active
on 18 April on 7,100 and 3,700 MHz.
CLUB NEWS
The Magalies Amateur Radio Club will be building antennas on Saturday 23 A
pril 2022. The event will take place at the Club house. If you are interes

At the Hibiscus Coast ARC AGM held on 27 March 2022, the following membe

PROPAGATION REPORT
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at moderate levels. There are currently six sunspots with simple to co mplex magnetic configurations visible. There is a moderate chance of M-cla
ss and a slight chance of X-class flaring. If you want to do your own freq uency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week wi
ll be around 75. The 10 to 30 m bands may provide some good DX fun. Please

Die SARL Herfs QRP-kompetisie duur van 12:00 tot 13:30 UTC op Saterdag 9 A
pril 2022 met GG en ESB-aktiwiteit wat 5 Watt of minder gebruik. Die eerst
e 45 minute is beperk tot die 40 meter band en die laaste 45 minute op all

Maandag 18 April is Wêreld Amateur Radio Dag. Dit is ook 'n openbare
vakansiedag wat die Paasnaweek eindig. Dit was op 18 April 1925 dat die I nternasionale Amateur Radio-unie (IARU) tydens die Internasionale Radio Te legraaf konferensie in Parys gestig is. Daarom vier radioamateurs wêr
eldwyd hierdie dag elke jaar met spesiale aktiwiteite.
Die SARL sal op 18 April 2022 'n WARD-sertifikaat uitreik aan radio amateu
rs wat QSOs maak en 'n logstaat by

HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING
Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak gema
tig gaan wees. Tans is daar ses sonvlekke met eenvoudige tot gevorderde ma gnetiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n waarskynlikheid van M-klas en '
n geringe kans van X-klas sonfakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie frekwensievoor spellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling van 75 vir
die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan goeie DX openinge op die 10 tot 30 m
