Coordinating a frequency for a QSO on HF

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:01 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uc2swn/coordinating_a_frequency_for_a_qso_on_hf/

I want to chat with my brother while camping this summer. We’re both Hams
and have HF rigs and would like to try communicating while I’m portable at
    a campsite.
The question is how does one coordinate frequencies? Yes if I have cell
phone coverage (which is ubiquitous here in southern Ontario) we could
simply call or text to figure out a frequency. That kind of defeats the
purpose of it though and wouldn’t work in some backcountry locations.
Putting aside NVIS frequency requirements for our distance and assume we
could use any band we wanted 80-10m and have prearranged a time, how do we
find each other for the QSO? Even if we specifically predetermined a
frequency, there’s no guarantee that frequency will be free at the time or that propagation conditions would be ideal for that band that day/time.
Also, how does one choose the ‘best’ band to use at a given time. https://www.voacap.com/hf/ seems to be a sophisticated propagation tool but I’m not sure how to actually use it. I know we can just check band
conditions (or at least he can since he’ll be at home with Internet).
So, even if one of us has internet and chooses the most ideal band at the
time, how would we find each other if I don’t have internet. Would I simply tune around +/- some predetermined frequencies for each and every band
hoping to eventually find him on an unused frequency? There must be a more efficient way and we can’t be the first people to want to do this…
I’m aware of ALE but that’s probably too complicated for this use case.
Any ideas would be appreciated! submitted by /u/gimmesnows

Was 80m and 40m temporarily dead 0400 Zulu?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 10:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uc59sq/was_80m_and_40m_temporarily_dead_0400_zulu/

I have a chronic pain condition that keeps me from engaging in a radio
hobby regularly. However, I noticed when I checked a few months ago the
bands were alive like it was 1990s. Then I check again tonight and it’s
dead again, at least here in the US. I got a SWL radio and started checking
the bands now and then due to recent events.
So just wonder if those regularly engaged can confirm the band was dead tonight. I’m just not listening often enough to be current and know what’s going on.
Edit: I checked again (5:30 Zulu) just before I head to bed and the band is back alive. Weird. submitted by /u/joshingkatie

Short loaded tap HF antenna and tuner? Comet HFJ-350M and X5100 transceiver

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uc2gb8/short_loaded_tap_hf_antenna_and_tuner_comet/

    Question.
I have a Comet HFJ-350M to use with my X5100 transceiver.
My radio has a built in auto tuner. I was wondering what the point of
tuning the loaded antenna if my tuner can tune the antenna? If not, if
there a general band I should set the tap for? submitted by /u/mikeinmlb

Yaesu FT-2DR Port for Firmware Update

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:43 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uc2g4p/yaesu_ft2dr_port_for_firmware_update/

I have a used Yaesu FT-2DR, and I want to update the firmware.
Unfortunately it didnt come with any accessories. Ive read that I can
update the firmware by using a USB Type Mini - B, and I just wanted to
confirm this is possible before spending the extra cash for the Yaesu
cables. Too confirm I just want to update the Main, Sub and Display
firmware not program the unit. Thanks! submitted by /u/kwpg3

    Linking analog 70cm repeaters + RLC3. SOS.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:58 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ubz7zr/linking_analog_70cm_repeaters_rlc3_sos/

Greetings. I am trying to make a link between two UHF repeaters using RLC-3 controllers from Link Communication, for this, I am using two diagrams as a reference, my doubts are: Is a controller necessary for each site
including the intermediate site? Can a handheld radio be used as the intermediate VHF 2m repeater to link the other two, in order to establish a successful link between repeaters A and B (as shown in the pic 1). Once the 70cm repeater ara linked the Rxa and Rxb (and Txa and Txb) frequencies can
be the same as shown in pic 1? Is the connection in pic 2 suitable?

Thank you a lot for your time reading...
