    Tattoo Ideas?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 11:16 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugj579/tattoo_ideas/

For starters: I apologize for any errors in spelling/terminology. I know nothing about ham radio. I also apologize if this is the wrong spot for
this or if its against the rules.
My grandfather adores ham radio. He always has, its something interesting
that he tries to share with us grandkids but I was never a science kid. Im
18 now and hes 78 and hes dying soon. Hes pretending hes not, but he is. I think hell be lucky if he makes it to September. I want to get a tattoo
once he does pass, just something small. I want it to be ham radio themed, because it really was one of his passions, but like I said before, I dont
know a damn thing about them. Does anyone have any ideas for ham radio
    tattoos? submitted by /u/Wonderful-Gap8765

    Yaesu FT891 vs FT991A

    Posted: 01 May 2022 08:49 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uggvs4/yaesu_ft891_vs_ft991a/

This might be an odd question but I will give it a try.
I own FT891 since 2019. Great radio and works well. I use it mainly for
POTA and camping trips but I am planning to move from condo to a freehold
where I can have some antenna setup (other than vhf/uhf). I really like the concept of "shack in the box" that 991a offers and I dont mind paying for
    it.
The single and most important thing I will be making my decision on is reliability. I am sure both radios can do more than what I would ever ask
them to do, but which one would last longest and give me less of a
headache. I know the previous generation of 991 had some issues with
blowing finals and that was addressed with 991A.
Should I keep FT 891 or FT991A is a-ok to be my next radio? submitted

FT8 QRM, or when you discover a fellow ham about a 1/2 mile away....

    Posted: 01 May 2022 03:32 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugb5de/ft8_qrm_or_when_you_discover_a_fellow_ham_about_a/

So todays rabbit hole has been about QRM. Long story short I do HF
listening while I work towards a general and recently have been
experimenting with a Ethernet cable antenna and a nanoVNA in a quest for optimal reception. After doing some work I tuned up 20m and was being
blasted by a very strong signal, so much so I had to turn the gain all the
way down on my RTL module. I tracked the signal down to the FT8 calling
freq and fired up wsjtx to figure out who it was how close they might be.
Turns out about a half mile, I could probably see the stations QTH if the
    trees had no leaves.
I think based on what Ive read the spurious signals at +/- ~32khz of the fundamental frequency are power supply noise and Im close enough to pick
that up, or is this an example of a fundamental overload of the receiver
even after turning the gain down? I also noticed CW operators whos signal
also had a mirror @ +/- the same amount (give or take), you can also see a voice signal @ around 14.18 with a ghost around 14.16. Whats going on here? https://preview.redd.it/tro2e19ewxw81.png?width=1613&format=png&auto=webp&s=832c0e866d8aebd2287151f378518f02b69c0f51

Anyone have an Alinco 110 (DR-110T) they could send pictures of?

    Howdy everyone!
Just nabbed an Alinco DR-110T at near-fest. It txs fine and appears to rx,
but no audio goes to the speaker or rear jack.
Theres a crackle in the speaker when first turning the unit on, then
silence. Feels like a short or something.
Id like to troubleshoot it, but theres not really any schematics online.
So, does anyone have a 110 they could pop open and take an interior picture from the top and the bottom so I can compare it?
It would be a huge help if so!!
Edit: found one person, but the more photos and experience, orobably the better, so if anyone else is interested let me know! submitted by /u/LinuxIsFree

Resource for HAM etiquette or best practices?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 11:27 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ug62fn/resource_for_ham_etiquette_or_best_practices/

Got my technician license. I read through all of Part 97 and I have an EE background already, so those areas of the test were a cake walk (more or
less, need to get more familiar with the frequencies).
But there were etiquette and best practice, and radio theory kinds of questions. I was left wondering where the question authors were expecting people to obtain this information. Theres a lot of resources on the
subreddit Wiki, but I wasnt sure which one(s) to dig into for the key
concepts on the exam (outside of Part 97), or would be applicable to the technician level.
For prep, I was able to rely on flash cards from HamStudy to fill in those gaps, so being prepared for the exam wasnt an issue. I also went through
KB6NUs No-Nonsense Study Guide. But for example:
How should you respond to a station calling CQ?
What is the function of automatic gain control, or AGC?
What is generally the best time for long-distance 10 meter band propagation
    via the F layer?
Or just questions involving Q codes (though I do have a Q reference sheet).
I didnt know where to find that beyond Google or just studying the flash
card. Feel like theres more to unpack in those questions than just
    memorizing the answer.
Would the ARRL Handbook kind of be the bible on that to give a high level understanding (wanted to know before buying it)? Or do I just need to hit
the library and dig up several books from the resource list on the
different subject matters? submitted by /u/sidepart

Can I get a review of my planned HF setup?

    Posted: 01 May 2022 06:28 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugegq7/can_i_get_a_review_of_my_planned_hf_setup/

Right now I have an FT-3DR and Im trying to move into HF, and I would appreciate a look over my parts list to make sure it includes everything I would need to get on the air. IC-705 Power supply IC-AH705 Tuner 3 ft.
    PL-259 COAX jumper MFJ-1778M G5RV antenna 3D Printed Iambic key MFJ-1910
Mast Right angle BNC Elbow COMET VHF/UHF Whip Antenna (I know I said this
was for HF, but if the transceiver can do VHF/UHF I might as well get an antenna for it.)
Some background is I got my technician license years ago just fly drones,
and until recently I was never really interested in using my license to communicate with other people. Because I got my license without regard for anything under 900 MHZ, I didnt really focus on voice communication on the exam. Im planning on going for general soon to refresh the areas I brushed
over on the technician exam, as well as unlock those sweet voice privileges
on HF. Thanks for the help and as the kids say 73. submitted by /u/theflyingspaghetti

    Antenna measuring question.

    Posted: 01 May 2022 08:02 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugg4g4/antenna_measuring_question/

So, I posted a question regarding antenna for use in a manpack
configuration i.e.: no ground plane and as compact/whip like as possible
for mobility reasons and ounces equal pounds in pounds equal pain mindset
kind of thing. So, I know that you can easily figure out the length of the antenna for best resonance on a certain frequency however I never quite
learned where exactly you start measuring said antenna. Because I know that
the cable from the radio to the viewpoint of the antenna is also part of
the system. In the one that I have now, the jumper cables attached to a
small metal plate and the antenna portion is comprised of two narrow
aluminum poles with a whip that is super flexible on the top of the second
one. So let’s say I want to operate on the 147.550. Is 2.39 m know where
the hell do I measure 2.39 m in order to make the antenna adjustment. Logic would point me in the direction of the flexible web but I’m certainly no expert so again sorry for the long post and your help if able. submitted

    DTMF on Echolink help please

    Posted: 01 May 2022 10:20 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugibpl/dtmf_on_echolink_help_please/

Im a very new HAM trying to figure out using Echolink via a HT using DTMF.
I saw a video where a guy was contacting people across the country using echolink which I know how to use through the Echolink phone app, but he was using his HT going through his Echolink enabled local repeater to contact
other Echolink enabled repeaters. He did not show how he specifically did
it. From what Ive researched is that DTMF is a way that while holding down
the PTT button you can type in the node code of the repeater on echolink
that you wish to connect to and then theres other codes to disconnect and
do other things? I havent found success yet. Is there a general frequency
setup that all Echolink nodes are set to receive DTMF on? Do all Echolink enabled repeaters allow DTMF to work? So far this is how I tried:
Have my HT setup properly to connect to the repeater I want to use. I gave
my call sign and informed I was attempting to connect to Echolink and
proceeded to key in 9999 while holding down the PTT button and got no
results. The repeater Im trying to use is just a few city blocks away. I
could be very confused and off base. Id appreciate all the help. I think it would be super cool to do as its a combination of ham radio, repeaters, and
the internet all working together to contact someone via a simple HT is why
Im exploring it. submitted by /u/ajgregers

    D-Star issue

New to D-Star and Im trying to register for D-Star in Reno, NV The gateway repeater is N7NDS. When I go to DSTARUSERS.ORG and click on the gateway registration URL for this repeater, it just sits there and then gives me a message that the page failed to load. Makes no difference if it is a Mac or
PC. I am thinking something is up with the website, although the repeater
seems active. Question I have is, can I register with any D-Star gateway,
in another city or state and it will work in Reno too? submitted by /u/FirstRonin

Recommended budget HF rigs and general advice for a noob

    Posted: 01 May 2022 09:13 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ug37xc/recommended_budget_hf_rigs_and_general_advice_for/

Recently got the itch to get back into ham radio. I was able to pass the
extra exam and am looking to get back into HF and CW. My main question is
what used radios would you recommend around the $500 range. I’ve mainly
    been looking at the following:
    Kenwood TS 570d, 480sat Icom 718, 729, 7200, 706mkIIg, 746 Yaesu ft-450d
    Ten tec Jupiter
Are there any others you’d recommend? I’ve been checking R&L electronics, QRZ, QTH, and I’m planning on going to Hamfest later this month.
I’m also going to my local club’s meeting next week to meet people and talk/learn more. Been doing research on antennas as well and hoping to
build a doublet for 40 and 20m. Any other advice for a noob getting back
into the hobby? Thanks in advance for your time and help! submitted by /u/leaveitbehind66

Good setup to receive two-tone UHF signals

    Posted: 01 May 2022 04:28 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ugc9w0/good_setup_to_receive_twotone_uhf_signals/

Disclaimer: I know posts like these usually get downvoted, but I have a
general license and nothing that Im doing is against FCC/ham radio rules.
Vol. firefighter, I have a two-tone pager (Minitor VI from Motorola) that
pages me when there is an emergency. So far this year there have been 40
calls but my pager went off 38 times. Its because I live in a hilly area
    and not everything goes through.
My chief is fine with it but I really really want to be able to respond to
all calls, so I want to build my own alert system (receive only, no
    transmit).
The only thing I want to do is receive the two-tone signal over UHF (460
Mhz) and turn it into a computer signal or something, so I can build an
    alert system for myself.
I know I said Im a general, but Ive never done anything other than use my
Yaesu FT-60 handheld, so I know next to nothing about antennas and
receivers, so I would really appreciate any guidance here. submitted by /u/MutedStudy1881
