stereo to mono wiring for Xiegu G90 and CE-19 data interface

    Posted: 12 May 2022 04:39 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uoefue/stereo_to_mono_wiring_for_xiegu_g90_and_ce19_data/

I bought the CE-19 data interface so I could try FT8 and other digital
modes with my G90. I was surprised to discover its a "build your own cable"
kit and not a ready-to-use product, and there are no real instructions. It seems that the three included single-ended stereo cables must be soldered together to create a Y-cable, but Ive found contradictory info about
    exactly how to do this.
In hindsight, I think the CE-19 is really designed for controlling an
external amp. Its use as an audio in/out adapter for digital modes seems
like an awkward afterthought. I dont understand how it has so many 5-star reviews, almost none of which mention the difficulty of creating your own cable. I wonder if the product changed, and it used to contain a ready-made cable?
Anyway theres a tutorial here: https://digitalshack.org/xiegu-g90-the-ce-19-cabling/ But I think it may
have an error, it looks like its shorting together the left and right
headphone outputs from the sound card. I found a separate doc that said
only the right output should be connected, and the left unconnected. Then
for the sound card mic input, its a stereo input but only a mono output
from the G90, so how should it be connected? submitted by /u/blinkybit

How risky is buying a used rig at the Hamvention flea market?

    Posted: 12 May 2022 01:23 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uoa630/how_risky_is_buying_a_used_rig_at_the_hamvention/

This will be my first Hamvention (licensed April 2021) and Ill be in the
market for an HF rig, but my budget is limited and I dont want a Chinese
rig. Id like to find something from Yeasu or Icom that covers 160 - 6, but
with my budget Im thinking used will get me more bang for my buck, but
worry about spending so much on something with no warranty. How risky is
buying a used rig at Hamvention? submitted by /u/KE8RXQ

    Interference

    Posted: 12 May 2022 07:55 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uo2y0s/interference/

Hey I figured this would be the best place to post about an issue I get
while my dads using his radio. It’s interfering with my pc audio. I have ferrite chokes everywhere but nothing at all has made a difference. It’s slowly driving me mad. Any ideas guys? Edit- the interference was greatly reduced by earthing my cable to my pc chassis. Thanks guys you’ve helped
more than you can imagine. 👍 submitted by /u/Penta-Flan

    Yeasu FT5D question

I’m pretty new to Ham and just got this radio. I programmed in several 2 meter repeaters using RT programming and that went well except it added my channels to the B band and I wanted (assumed) it would add them to the A
band. My question, it there a way to switch those programmed frequencies
into the A band spot? I appreciate your help submitted by /u/JBW500

End Fed Vs mobile CB radio antenna

    Posted: 12 May 2022 04:05 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uodsf6/end_fed_vs_mobile_cb_radio_antenna/

Why would I have a lot more strong frequency signals on my CB radio antenna that’s mounted on my truck just parked and not hardly hear as many signals with my end fed wire antenna? My end fed wire antenna is up through my
trees. With just 20 watts I was able to talk to Panama in my truck with a
cb radio antenna on 10 meters. submitted by /u/Routine_Watercress76

Ideas on raising money for college club?

    Posted: 12 May 2022 03:55 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uodldi/ideas_on_raising_money_for_college_club/

    Hi all,
So I’m part of a University ham club that’s trying to get an HF station going (we had one for a really long time, but somewhere over the last 15
years we lost it, and we’re almost totally at square one with it now). Anywho, one of the hurdles that we’re going to face is raising the money to get the equipment. We have a few ideas already, but I figured it was worth
a shot to ask the oracle of Reddit.
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Did a poll on what radio to get and wanted to share the results. Everyone recommended saving more and moving to the Yaesu ft-60. Lucked out and found
an almost brand new Yaesu vx-6 in my budget! submitted by /u/zac_in_ak

Looking for something comparable to the Kenwood TS-480

    Posted: 12 May 2022 12:12 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uo8myr/looking_for_something_comparable_to_the_kenwood/

Just picked up an RV and am looking for an HF unit to put in it. Ive used
the TS-480 in the last and enjoyed it and felt like it would be a good fit,
but just learned that it was discontinued. I could pick up a used one, but
was wondering if there is anything comparable as well. Thought about the Elecraft KX3. Any thoughts? submitted by /u/90South

    Size of Ground Plane

    Posted: 12 May 2022 07:34 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uo2hob/size_of_ground_plane/

I have a Radioddity DB25 25w mobile radio with a magnetic antenna for my
car and it works just fine. I was wondering though, how big of a ground
plane do I need to use it well in the house instead? Ive heard, and used
basic things like a baking pan, but is there a definitive required size,
like you can calculate the size of an antenna based on the frequency, what about for ground plane size?

Id like to use it as a mini home base station and it came with a decent
size antenna, just trying to figure out how to home mount it =D submitted
