    NVIS antenna for small yard

    Posted: 31 May 2022 07:35 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v26o9s/nvis_antenna_for_small_yard/

I’m in Chicago with all the QRM that comes from living in a city. I cannot hear local nets (20-200 miles). I have no problem hearing long distance
stuff, but local stuff is more static than signal. My current antennas are
a Diamond BB7V and an Ultimax DXtreme - none of which are remotely set up
    for NVIS.
I have a 30’x37’ yard and can probably hang something up about 10’ with threading through tree branches.
Given this setup, what would be the best 80-10m NVIS antenna I could set
    up? submitted by /u/txtreyg

Mainly out of curiosity I recently "retook" all three of the USA license
exams (using online practice exams) and I found it an enlightening
    experience.
There were things Id forgotten and things I understood much better now than when I originally passed. I realized that there were some things that I
wanted to dig deeper into, and things that I realized I misunderstood, or
at least didnt understand with as much nuance back when.
Has anyone else done this? Its actually pretty cool. submitted by /u/Malcolm_KS0T

Question about antenna tuners and loop antennas

    Posted: 31 May 2022 09:56 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v291w1/question_about_antenna_tuners_and_loop_antennas/

Hi all, I am a new ham with a potentially dumb question. I am looking
around for compact antennas I can stick in a dorm room or apartment as well
as quickly put up outdoors and came across loop antennas with matching networks, such as the MFJ-9232 and MFJ-935. These things seem to work
pretty well given their size and portability.
Can a loop of wire be connected to any antenna tuner or do these products
offer functionality that a normal antenna tuner would not? submitted by /u/JohnB_XP

    Speciality subs for antennas/tower building?

    Posted: 31 May 2022 08:36 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v1t180/speciality_subs_for_antennastower_building/

    Good morning/afternoon/evening,
I have a 30 ft section of tower and an antenna I’m going to be using for SWLing and chicken banding until I get my license.
We’ve just moved into a new place and I’m in an area with zero antenna regulation. Out in the country as it were.
Doing all this to keep my feet wet while I drill down and study for my
    license.
Anyway, y’all know of any subs for antenna building? Going to do a lot of long wire/random wire stuff to better understand the bands, propagation and what not. I’ll also need advice with the erection of the tower as well. Thanks in advance…

    Posted: 31 May 2022 09:44 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v1ujho/a_couple_more_things_from_a_newbie/

Ive had my tech license for years but its been largely unused. I recently
got a FT-60R but am shy about screwing up etiquette when I key up. I still havent said the first word.
    1) Id like to confirm that I can reach some of the various repeaters, but without a friend strategically placed well outside my simplex range, how
can I do this? I havent got any radio qualified friends and from looking at local clubs, the closest member age to mine is about 30 years my senior.
    2) I hear a net in the mornings with transmissions from all around the
country and overseas. I cant remember the exact frequency but I am leaning toward 145.***. Are repeaters setup to daisy chain across the USA? Or are
folks just using incredibly long range systems? How would I know if I could participate, aside from just keying up with my call sign and seeing if I
    get a response?
    3) Assuming repeaters will daisy chain to carry a signal across the
country: is there a map somewhere that will simulate a transmission and how
it would link various repeaters to spread the transmission?
    3) Now this one feels stupid to even ask, but here it goes. Exactly how
should I initiate a contact for purposes of testing my range or repeater access? "(Call sign) (call sign) standing by"?
    4) How does the FT-60R know the frequency offset for repeaters? Surely
there are repeaters on the same frequency across the globe with different offsets?
Any guidance is appreciated! submitted by /u/PrsnlInfoAccount

APRS Mobile Setup - Radio Advice Needed

    Hi All,
Does anyone have advice on a mobile radio, preferably 50W, that can take a 3.5mm input from a tablet?
I like the way APRSDroid displays info and would like to use it for my
mobile setup either via a 3.5mm audio or Bluetooth to a TNC.
Problem is Im not seeing a lot of mobile radios that support input from a
    TNC or tablet.
I have an old Yaesu I could use but I need a six pin rj-11 to 3.5mm which I cant seem to find!
Edit: Im an idiot guys. I finally dug out the spare mobile radio I had. Its
a FT-2600M which has a DB9F serial port on the back. Just need to find a

    Grounding and lightning

    Posted: 30 May 2022 10:28 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v1j132/grounding_and_lightning/

    Hi, everyone!
I’ve always mounted antennae indoors to avoid a huge gap in my knowledge,
but I’m looking to change that.
To mount an antenna on my roof (VHF/UHF), what kind of grounding and
lighting protection should I be seeking? I’m near the top of a hill -
higher than most, but not all, houses in my area with plenty of
thunderstorms. Can I ground into my plumbing (presumable like the rest of
my house) or should I bury a separate ground rod? I assume a lightning
arrester is a good idea, but you know what they say about assumptions.
I would really love some wisdom from the collective knowledge of this
subReddit in mounting my first outdoor antenna. thanks!

    Advice on radio choice

    Posted: 31 May 2022 10:38 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v1vpwm/advice_on_radio_choice/

Let me just start off saying I am very much an amateur when it comes to
radios. I have 3 cheaper Baofeng, and primarily use them 2-3 times a year
for rally, as I volunteer at the Ojibwe Rally, and the others closer to me.
I am looking for advice on what to get. I plan on trying to set up my
mobile for cross-band repeat, and using my handheld if I need to be out of
my car, as there are several dead spots and I might have to park my car
away from where Im really needed
I have a 2005 Subaru Baja, and there isnt much room to mount anything. My
plans so far: Icom 2370a mounted under the seat, with the face plate
mounted either on the dash or a windshield mount New cable for the antenna Antenna to be mounted in the bed.
I do not currently have a tonneau cover, but plan to make one out of wood
and felt, then mount the antenna in the middle. Would I need a metal plate
to help with reception / transmitting? Or would the flat wood be good
enough? What antenna would be recommended? We use 2m band primarily at the rally, so thats what my focus is on.
I do appreciate the help, and apologize for my dumpster fire of a post with regards to organization and everything. (Also, on mobile) submitted by /u/Fireball857
