Wow is all I can say

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:19 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v3o04i/wow_is_all_i_can_say/

I just received my license two days ago and wow is all I can say. I have checked into 3 nets and made some local chats on a nearby repeater and this experience has been great so far. I originally gotten interested in HAM
radio years back in high school but decided to get my license after moving
to a quite isolated city this summer. The first net I joined was extremely welcoming and warming in conversation and ragchew. The two latter nets is
what really made my year. On the nets there are a few older gentleman that check in almost every night and the kindness when these older gentlemen
wish everyone on the net a good day/evening/etc really makes me happy.
Despite the fact I may never meet these people in real life, the connection over the radio truly make these operators feel like grandparents. It is so heartwarming.
Thank you all who have been helping me out on my journey in getting my
license and with stuff that lies ahead. Truly a very overlooked hobby.
Going on a net and having someone wishing you a great day and weekend can
turn anyone’s bad day around. I would love to see how the world/society
would change if everyone could experience the family-like and warm-hearted people/conversation in this hobby. submitted by /u/SpitePhysical3492

FCC allows FM on CB now?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2022 07:51 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v413gx/fcc_allows_fm_on_cb_now/

I was doing some reading before i left for work this morning, and I read
that companies are now producing CBs that can broadcast FM on the CB band
    (11 m, correct?).
Wouldnt FM come in clearer but have reduced range compared to traditional
    AM CB?
The reason i ask is because Ive seen hybrid radios that apparently do
AM/FM/SSB on 10 m and 11 m. This is intriguing to me, as a new ham
operator. One particular radio, from President, has 50 w output and can
operate on 10 m. I could get some pretty decent range out of a mobile with
SSB phone on the small sliver of 10 m Im currently licensed to use, right?
I just got my tech license for amateur radio this week, so I have a lot to learn, and Im still wrapping my head around all this. Sorry if this is a
    stupid question!
Trying to make sure i understand what it is and its limitations before i go buying another radio for my truck lol.
Thanks for any help! submitted by /u/treskaz

Ive posted about my mag loops before, and after this post about CQ WPX,
some people asked if there was a write up or guide, so here is what I put together. It isnt a complete build guide, and assumes the reader
understands the basics of how mag loops work. But, it covers the important details and my experience in building it. Its a bit long, but I enjoy
writing, and details are important to me. Hopefully this is helpful to
anyone who wants to build one of their own. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EYcwgq2cAUlgvUDQYhS3ZxVk_aOy7hIX/view?usp=sharing

TV satellite dish - can I use it for ham?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 06:41 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v3oel0/tv_satellite_dish_can_i_use_it_for_ham/

The previous owner of my house had Directv (or Dish). Could I take off the satellite dish and instead run an outdoor wire antenna to it, e.g. for SWL?
Is the satellite dish coax’d down through the walls? This would make it
nice and convenient for me to connect my radio to indoors...
Secondarily, does the dish itself have any utility for ham radio? Any
reason NOT to take it down? submitted by /u/ArguingWithVirgins

What is a decent yet affordable handheld ham radio for someone who is just getting their license?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:48 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v3qn3p/what_is_a_decent_yet_affordable_handheld_ham/

I made a post a few days ago asking if i should get my ham radio license,
and the amount of support and enthusiasm on that post led me to decide to
get it. I ordered a book from the ARRL, and have a test date on the 22nd of this month. That being said, i would like to get a fairly affordable radio, preferably a handheld.
I looked on amazon, and found several that look alright, but i know how
shoddy some things from amazon or similar places can be, so i want some suggestions. Im hoping to spend less than 100$ on this. submitted by /u/jason-murawski

Wolf River Coil or MFJ-2286 Big Stick?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:01 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v3ldag/wolf_river_coil_or_mfj2286_big_stick/

Hi all, I did some research on loaded vertical antennas, and it seems like
it would be the best option for my QTH (if you read my previous post, Ive
all but abandoned mounting anything on my roof, but there is a (slightly shorter) wooden abandoned shack next to my apartment that I can maybe mount something to). I do have a front yard that I can use to mount a loaded
vertical to, and Im deciding between the WRC Silver Bullet 1000 + WRC 213"
whip or MFJ-1979 204" whip, and a MFJ-2286 Big Stick. These two options
would come out to roughly the same price. Which one would you guys reckon
    would be better?

I travel quite a bit for work, and would like to operate HF from the
various hotel rooms I stay at. What antennas do you recommend that are easy
and relatively stealthy to deploy? I have a TX-500, which I normally run
with an EFHW, but that wire is just too long for most situations.

    Tyt md-2017 frequency problem

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 02:16 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/v3j4y9/tyt_md2017_frequency_problem/

    Hi,
So I have a tyt md-2017 HAM radio, but it has a problem, it cant seem to go above the 440 mhz frequency (firmware updated, new codeplug tried). If I go
to vfo mode and try to type for example 446.0000 the value will jump back
to 430.000, whilst scanning it will go up to 440.0000 mhz exact and then
start at the bottom 144.000 (which is also weird). If I have a channel
thats programmed with a frequency above the 440.000 (or below 430.000 mhz)
itll just show as "430.000 mhz" on the radio. I read somewhere about an
unlock (PTT + UP arrow + turn radio on), if I do that the frequency is
stuck at 450.000 mhz, nothing below or above.
    Anyone any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    Edit:
    - it DOES have a vhf/ufh antenna (136-174/400-480 mhz)
    - The CPS software also sees the (136-174/400-480 mhz) freq range (cps -
    basic information) submitted by /u/MrNoDescription

New to HF. Installed 87’ end fed wrapped around vinyl soffit of house. Average height 10-15’ above ground. Suburban development, single home. No overhead power lines nearby. 50’ of R213 coax from unun thru brick wall to basement shack. High background noise all the way across 160m, 80m, 40m &
20m: S7-S9 level and even across the bands. Tried turning off various appliances, unplugging nearby chargers for HTs, turn off fluorescent
lights… no change. No ferrite chokes yet. Have some on order. Where should

problem. I can transmit just fine and I receive too but if I hadnt used the radio for a few minutes then when receiving, I cant hear the received transmission. It will either come in very very quietly or the speaker wont sound off at all. Ive missed radio calls intended for me because I didnt
hear the call. This is all on analog. Before I go and buy a replacement
