Looking for a HT appropriate for a child.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 10:00 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vcz70l/looking_for_a_ht_appropriate_for_a_child/

Im working with my kid to study for the tech exam, based on current
practice test performance hes going to be ready soon; we already have the
    test scheduled.
I want to give him a VHF/UHF handheld as a gift for passing, but obviously
for children the selection criteria is more strict than for adults. Im
looking for a HT that satisfies these criteria:
Restricted to operate on ham bands (not like these Baofengs which are able
    to transmit on police/fire channels).
Easy to use. Menus are desirable, complex key combinations that you have to memorize or reference are bad. Fewer features is better because theres less
    to understand / navigate.
At least somewhat durable. submitted by /u/had_had_had_had

Looking for a 100w HF radio that can handle battery power voltages
~11.0-12.9v. It seems radios like the Icom 7300, FT100D have issues with voltages under 12.0V, even though specs say 13.8v +-15% submitted by /u/fsdigital12

FT5D (and its predecessors): Manually enter target-point coordinates?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 09:16 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vcy7jn/ft5d_and_its_predecessors_manually_enter/

Ive been fiddling around with my FT5D and FT1D and so far I havent figured
out a way to do this. The GPS screen has three location memories (star, L1,
L2) where you can save either your current position, or the position of the digital station currently transmitting. This works fine, but is there a way
to manually enter coordinates into either or these three memories? I tried turning off the GPS and setting manual coordinates for my position in the
APRS menu, but it doesnt seem to use those coordinates for the my position screen (or at least I cant get it to save to any of the memories when I do this).
Slightly related, is there a way to save coordinates from an APRS beacon in
the station list to any of these three memories, or do you have to use the distance/direction info shown in the beacon details? submitted by /u/davidbrit2

    Help with finding an antenna

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 08:48 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vcxjra/help_with_finding_an_antenna/

Hello! I was wondering if anyone can help me find an antenna for a mobile
    radio that:
    1) transmits/receives in the UHF band and 7/800Mhz bands
    and
    2) is discreet/low profile
This antenna will be installed and used for undercover vehicles in our
    county.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!!
Note: Apologize for any lack of detail/info I may have. Im new to this
field and am trying to learn as much as I can submitted by /u/Vast-Appointment5769

Question. I was on 40m around 12 PM EDT and heard a CQ for POTA. The
operator added something to the end of his CQ that wasnt familiar to me.
The transmission went something like this, "CQ CQ CQ. This is [call sign]
with parks on the air at K1588."
What is that last part, the "at K1588"? A location? Something else?

In a valley versus sea level for HF

    Posted: 15 Jun 2022 01:02 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vd3af4/in_a_valley_versus_sea_level_for_hf/

Why is it that when I use my radio with a CB radio antenna when I tune it
I’m able to hear a lot more stations when I’m above my valley when I’m at sea level in my truck as opposed to my radio as a base station radio which
is in a valley using an endfed wire antenna? 10 meters is quiet down in my valley, but it’s not quiet when I have my radio in my truck at sea level.

My SWR is very close to one from 10 m all the way up to 20 m and I’m wondering why the SWR isn’t near one starting from 30 to 160 meters? I’m asking this question because I may get an amplifier for my radio and I
don’t want to have to use an antenna tuner, do I still have to use an
antenna tuner with an amplifier if my SWR is near one, and how much can the
SWR be safely for the radio to use an amplifier without an antenna tuner? submitted by /u/Routine_Watercress76

Looking for review of my proposed Hexbeam install

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 08:05 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vckny1/looking_for_review_of_my_proposed_hexbeam_install/

    Hi,
I have a very narrow backyard and would like to put up a directional HF antenna. Its 16 from the rear wall of my home to the fenceline, so the only real option here is a hexbeam with its 11 turn radius.
My rough plan at this point is to use a 34 Rohn 9H50 mast with a rotator at
the bottom and a thrust bearing part of the way up, mounted to a 4x6 post
sunk 4 into the ground, and thru-bolted to the eave of the home at the 10 roofline.
The mast is 34 tall and will obviously require guying. Seeing that I have a fence so close to me, I am thinking I will use 2 more 4x6x16 posts, sunk 4
into concrete using round forms so that the footings are a couple inches
above grade as wood rot is an issue here on the coast. The guys toward the forward side of the home will be tied off to metal pipe bracketed &
thru-bolted to the eave at the roofline, possibly reinforced from behind
with unistrut tied into the joists or by doubling up the lumber behind the eave.
Im looking for some opinions on the mechanical strength of this setup, I am interested in making this project as robust as needed to ensure many years
of use and to reduce any possibility of my antenna coming down in close quarters where it could fall on my roof, my solar panels to the south, my shared fence with my neighbor, etcetera. Id like to go as big as needed on lumber and overbuild this thing now rather than lose sleep 10 years down
the line, or worse. I am planning to lower the mast as needed to the
roofline during times when I will either be away from home for an extended period, or storms are expected. QTH is 10 blocks from a protected bay with
the Pacific Ocean just beyond, so we do get some windy weather during the winter and spring.
I am not a mechanical engineer so I am not sure how to go about calculating
the breaking strength of these 4x6 posts, sticking 10-12 above ground (we
may cut the tops down to make them level with the roofline) and supporting
3x dacron guy ropes each to hold the mast up. Im pretty sure what I am
drawing up now would be robust but I have never put up an antenna of this
size and Id like to make sure that in the event of antenna failure due to weather, the mast has the best possible chance of staying vertical and is
not the weak link in the chain.
Does anyone have thoughts on tyhis setup as described or otherwise have experience with elevated guy points and the lateral forces that a Hexbeam
    might put on them?

    HF SOTA SSB Solutions

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 05:30 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vchqdc/hf_sota_ssb_solutions/

I am making the move into HF SOTA operation and will be doing SSB primarily
in W5/T where “bald” summits are predominant. I am looking for thoughts and experiences with different antennas in this kind of environment. I am also
now living on a 3rd floor apartment with good balcony space so an antenna
that could work in both places would be ideal.
For reference my SOTA rig is a XieguG90. I also plan to use this as a base
    rig as well.

Im a new HAM so this is probably 100% something I did or a radio config but
I have no clue what. This doesnt sound like RFI or EMI, I had my HT in the truck with me and it was fine. This happens intermittently Happens on UHV
and VHF Happens on A band and B Dual Watch is not on (and if it was youd
see the freq. change) Parked and turned off the truck and it still
happens. so far the only thing that fixes it is turning off the APRS
modem. Factory reset did seem to help but a) it defaults to APRS off and b)
    its intermittent
I called Yaesu support and the guy had no idea either. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ap43ypxom79c6os/IMG_3125.mov?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/bjgff3xixi5qlns/IMG_3144.MOV?dl=0 submitted

    Help me pick an antenna

Doing some running around for work and am sitting in the alaska interior wishing i had brought my HF radio with me, when i get back i will be
getting a pelican case set up so i can bring along my xiegu G90 but i lack
    a portable antenna
there is the MFJ-1979 vertical for 20m but would need a ground plane or
more likely ground radials and you want verticals off the ground usually?
more likely it looks like an inverted V or EFHW (or an EFHWiV?)
I am interested in portability vs flexibility at the moment so 20m is the
band i care about and anything higher (15m, 10m) would be a nice extra submitted by /u/squoril

    RFI and computer speakers

    Posted: 14 Jun 2022 06:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vcito3/rfi_and_computer_speakers/

I have a pair of Audioengine A5s hooked up to my PC, which is in my shack. Unfortunately, every I transmit, they make some ugly noise. Its not
terrible, but annoying. I tried some ferrite chokes on the various cables
going into them, but not much difference. Luckily, there is a power switch
on them, so I can just flip it off when on the radio, but it still bugs me.
Not really sure what else I can do, though. submitted by /u/physical_kid
