Finding the dang PTT pusher!
Posted: 20 Jun 2022 03:08 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgi1j3/finding_the_dang_ptt_pusher/
Hi! So since a year or so we’ve had the “pleasure of enjoying” a person on
our local repeater, that seems to have a lot of fun pushing weak signals
away with his PTT. Now he’s starting to use music and stuff. We’re assuming the local authorities will not react unless we have an approximate or exact address. So we have to find this person. I’ve thought about building a
system like DC9ST is presenting on YouTube with 3 raspberry pis and a main
PC to do the calculations. TDOA I think is the methodology.
It sounds interesting but I wonder why this project hasn’t really been explored more? When researching I read something about Doppler effect and
it sounds simpler, but I’m guessing this needs to be done on the move?
Making the base station method a lot more convenient, especially not
knowing then mr (I know it’s sexist, but I do assume it’s a guy, sorry) Ptt will make his appearance.
I guess my question is, is this the best approach? Is it worth investing countless hours in this project? I’ve never used matlab and I feel this is much too elevated for my ADD invaded mind.
The point is making this person stop. If there are tried social engineering methods that you can think of, please share. Life is short and there’s
other things I can think of doing, especially with propagation becoming so
much better.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and sharing your experiences.

Living the RG-6 lifestyle
Posted: 20 Jun 2022 06:32 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vglm21/living_the_rg6_lifestyle/
About a year ago, when I got into HF, I frankensteined together about
75-100 feet of feedline of ancient Radioshack RG-58 coax to run to my fan dipole (for 80, 40 (15), 30, 20, and 10). Its worked great, but I needed
new coax. My elmer suggested trying quad-shielded 75-ohm RG-6. I was a bit worried because it might be difficult to match with a multiband antenna.
But, after playing with the length of my patch cables (from the antenna
switch to the radio) I found that I had similar bandwidths to my old 50-ohm system, with the following low SWR points: 80 (1.1), 40 (1.3), 30 (1.3), 20 (1.4), 15 (1.9), 10 (1.1). I used experimentation over math (math might
have been useful) and I found that this was a good compromise (I could get perfect 1:1 SWR on some bands at the expense of others). Anyway, I had the
RG-6 laying around (free, I guess) and by just buying a few f-connector adapters I think I have a much better, lower-loss system. Might be worth trying! submitted by /u/mr_noun

Taking a cruise from Vancouver BC to Alaska this summer. I am NOT the
cruise kind of guy but Im willing to give it a try for my wifes sake. On
the (slightly larger than large) off chance that I am bored. out. of. my. mind... Is it OK to dangle a wire over the railing and listen (possibly
send)? Ive got some important professional certifications behind me finally
and now Im back - I *WILL* finish my decade-old goal of becoming proficient
in CW. Figure Ill bring my 20m QCZ with me, along with a 3d-printed paddle
and spend time topside actually accomplishing something.
Any reason I couldnt do that? Are there laws governing ham bands on the
open sea? submitted by /u/john_with_a_camera

QRP Rocks! (but conditions help!)
Posted: 19 Jun 2022 06:14 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vg9hfn/qrp_rocks_but_conditions_help/
Had a great time working the ARRL June VHF Contest, using my FT-817ND, 6M
Shark hamstick, ancient Radio Shack HTX-242, and 2M Tram mag mount antenna
on my car. I had 23 QSOs; 15 on 6M SSB, 1 on 2M SSB, 1 on 432 SSB, and 6 on
2M FM. I wasnt hearing much activity down at ground level, so i drove to a local state park within my grid square for some elevation, and things got
more lively real fast! Had contacts in 9 grid squares (4 of them new) and a
DX contact (VE2), all with my 6M setup and 5 watts. Both my 2M and 432
contacts were made using my 6m antenna! On 432, after swapping grids, I
asked the other op for a signal report. He told me 55; He chuckled when I
told him I was QRP, but had an actual guffaw when I told him I was using
the 6M antenna! Anyway, overall I didnt have a ton of QSOs, nor will I ever
win my section or state, but I had a great time, and that for me is the
name of the game. Its always great to work QRP, and the 817, in my opinion,
is a great performer. Elevation was key, and 6M was open to somewhere both contest days. Looking forward to the CQ VHF contest in July, and will
continue working HF in the meantime, as the propagation gods permit.

Hi Reddit,
Just passed my foundation HAM radio license here in the UK, and after
listening to web SDRs for so many hours, I can finally transmit myself!
Issue is, I dont know where to start looking - Im looking for a handheld as
Im still a university student and cant afford a big ol base station yet, as much as Id LOVE one
Any advice on a <£200 handset? I just cant wait to get started transmitting and chatting to the community, and having to search and wait is killing me!
Any advice would be appreciated greatly! submitted by /u/AmazingAlo

How to confirm a station is replaying to me if they don't say callsigns.
Posted: 19 Jun 2022 11:52 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgf6sj/how_to_confirm_a_station_is_replaying_to_me_if/
Hi all, so I am just starting to make dx contacts. One thing I am finding, sometimes in clusters, the station in question does not say the callsign of
the station, this can make it hard to tell if its you they are talking to,
in this case I just have to assume its me there talking to and call it QSO.
I am curious if anyone else gets int these situations? submitted by /u/wassup2190

WSJT-X / No Power Output

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vg6jqm/wsjtx_no_power_output/
Ive been beating my head against the wall since yesterday with this one, so here we go..........
WSJT sees signals, I am putting out good reports to pskReporter, good rig control direct and through HRD. Both software key up radio, I hear tones through my speakers.....
No power output. Like the radio isnt getting the audio.
FT-450D, previously and successfully worked with WSJT and DM on digi
modes on a Win7 machine RT Systems 232 / USB cat cable New W10 / 64 machine
HRD and WSJT have good control of the radio.
I have played with these settings tried different baud rates, all changed
in port settings and WSJT Data bit settings Stop bit settings Handshake /
FC settings PTT Methods (WSJT) (CAT, RTS, DTR) Enabled and un enabled CAT
RTS in the rig Changed CAT RATE to Data and back to 38400 in the rig CAT
TOT is currently at 10 per internet advice but had been at 3000 for
previous set up DTYPE had been on RTTY for previous setup but is now on
USERU Have tried various USB ports on desktop (old machine and rig liked a specific one)
I do remember having mic output on my old machine, and I cant find it on
the new machine. Win recognized RT cable and is using RT driver. Sound
screen sees and recognizes rig as FT450, but only as an input. I only have
my speakers as an option for output.
What pedestrian simple thing have I missed. submitted by

Why are "messages encoded for the purpose of obscuring their meaning"
illegal? I thought it would be really fun to make up ciphers and talk in
code over radio to my friends.
Posted: 19 Jun 2022 08:05 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgbh44/why_are_messages_encoded_for_the_purpose_of/
I just started studying for yhe Technician exam and started practicing on MorseMania after playing around with a shortwave radio and learning about numbers stations. I was surprised to see that transmitting encoded messages
is illegal.
Maybe its just newbie ignorance, but I feel encoded messages are a big part
of the history of and spirit of radio with cb slang, morse code, and codetalkers etc.
I was just curious to see experienced ham opinions, because I found that to
be somewhat discouraging. A big initial appeal of radio to me, is the connection of it to history, spies, etc. I think it would be fun to talk in code to my friends and try to decode messages with ciphers. But also I
could see it being fun to try to crack the codes as a game or for games
like scenario paintball. submitted by /u/poopybumbum1

My 2m/440 RadioddityDB25 (Aka QYT KT8900D) Radio on receive is leaking into
my IC7300...
Posted: 19 Jun 2022 08:05 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vgbgsn/my_2m440_radiodditydb25_aka_qyt_kt8900d_radio_on/
Okay, not sure if this is normal. So I have an IC7300, and yesterday there
was a pre-net on 2 meter, I had my Radioddity DB25 on, not transmitting,
and the audio was coming over on 75 meter at S9... it was acting like a VU meter, even the squelch static pop was showing up.
The rigs are about a meter apart in the shack, and their antennas are at opposite ends of my lot (about 60-70 feet). Is this normal, or is the DB25 putting out a LOT of RF from its receive and/or audio output? Or just a
sign of a poorly shielded RIG.
Im not a big fan of this radio (I love the IC7300, but the DB25 is slow at scanning, about 1 per second). But I got it cheap a few months back as an
open box at Radioddity (It was under $50), and it got me on the air...I get transmitting RF bleeding over, but RECIEVE? Or is this normal, and nothing
to worry about. Im thinking this is a time to pick up an ICOM or Yeosu dual band rig for the shack. submitted by /u/PinkertonFld

QDX is a blast!
Posted: 19 Jun 2022 12:57 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vfq8db/qdx_is_a_blast/
As a relative newcomer to the hobby, all my Tx has been on 2m and 70cm on a FT-4X handheld. Ive always been fascinated about HF and listened via an RTL dongle to the whole spectrum! Im not a big talker, so digital was a big
pull for me so I bought QRP Labs QDX tranciever kit and finally got to
build it earlier this week.
Using a 20m dipole made from speaker wire stapled to the rafters in my
attic I got a handful of FT8 contacts from around Europe and the Canary
Islands in my first short session. Im based in the UK so a ~3000km 2 way contact blew my little mind!
Then I gave WSPR a go. On the 2nd transmit cycle I was heard by a VK
station, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET on 5 watts! Not only that, but I also heard HIS station and hes only running 5w too (Although looking at his QRZ page, his huge/high yagis were probably doing most of the heavy lifting!)
edit: Just checked the log, it wasnt the same VK station that I heard, but still another VK on the other side of the earth!
The kit was fairly straightforward to build, although winding the torroids
was a bit fiddly. The assembly manual is excellent and explains as well as instructs.
Maybe this is not news to you more experienced guys, but such long DX on
such low power with such an un-optimal antenna setup really surprised me
and I had a blast! submitted by /u/cathairpc
