SARL KAROO BEACON NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

The SARL Beacon team is making progress on the Next Generation Beacon proj
ect. While the device shortages are still delaying the arrival of the actu
al beacon, the team is working on several other fronts. The MOU to secur
e the site has been hand-delivered to the owner of the farm and is expecte
d to be signed within the next two weeks. Len du Plessis, ZS3LEN, has
visited the site and has taken many photographs enabling the teams to sta
rt the planning process of where to place the solar panels and the fencing
around the site. A complete solar power installation has been donated. Th
e donor wants to remain anonymous. "We however would like to thank
him for this major contribution," Brian Jacobs, Project Manag
    er said.

Cor Rademeyer, ZS6COR, has been working on the telemetry and control s
ystems. He is currently testing the reliability and a system to monitor th
e stability of Raspberry Pi used for telemetry and control. This includes
a node MCU and a watchdog timer circuit. "We have to be absolutel
y sure that we can control this system remotely with several additional fa ll-back positions as the location is very remote, which of course is ide
al for a beacon," he told the team at the monthly progress meeti
ng last Thursday. The members of the team are working on a beacon monitori
ng network, alternative beacon designs and antennas.

The Next Generation Beacon fund currently stands at just over 50% of the R
60 000 target. The fund was started by AMSAT SA on behalf of the SARL Beac
on Project team. Please head over to the AMSATSA Website at www.amsatsa.or
    g.za (https://sarl.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u'b05a8cba9589bf8d0 19e5d3&id2fc67b71&eœe7bd785b) and contribute to the fund. U
se your debit or credit card to make your donation. Click on the R50 of R2
50 or R1 000 button and complete the details on the PayFast platform. PayF
ast is South Africa's largest and most secure credit card payment
platform. Your donation will be acknowledged by e-mail and your name and
call sign added to the list of supporters.
