The "when you're only a tech on SOTA" meme reminded me of my longest 2m FM
SOTA QSO from March this year: 99.7 miles from Mount Tamalpais, California!
I still have an itch for an HF transceiver, though...

Advice on getting into Ham radio

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 07:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2hm6d/advice_on_getting_into_ham_radio/

Hey there! I’d love to get into ham radio. However I noticed that there are some licenses I need to obtain, and I have a hard time finding info on these/where to get them. I am 17, have a SSN, which I’ll likely need to register in CORES, but thats all I know right now. How much does a
transmitter cost? What bands/frequencies can I use? It’s difficult to find information. submitted by /u/TheArthritisGuy

Preferred hardware size(s) for antenna feedpoints?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 06:09 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2fnd7/preferred_hardware_sizes_for_antenna_feedpoints/

Hello, all. Im curious about what your preferences are for antenna
feedpoint hardware. Im planning on stocking up on some stainless steel fasteners, but am interested in feedback on preferred sizes.
    SO-239 bulkheads use 4-40 or M3, so some 4-40 or M3 are a must. 6-32 or
M3.5 are common on 20A terminal strips, and crimp spade or ring connectors
are easy to get for many wire sizes. 1/4" or M6 seems like overkill, but
    maybe not?
If you had to pick a few machine screw sizes to maintain a stock of for
antenna projects, which sizes would you focus on? submitted by

How to determine placement of a 160 meter double zepp

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 07:26 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2h94f/how_to_determine_placement_of_a_160_meter_double/

I saw another post on here about receiving 160 meters. I have a 160 meter double zepp antenna which is 735 foot long. I have a spot in a valley, I
know valleys arent the best, but I am not sure how to calculate which peaks
to hang it from to get the center of it close to my operating location. My
plan is to run 100 feet of rope to each end which results in my total
    length requirement of 935 feet.
I can buy a laser range finder but wondering if there is a better way to measure the distances. Obviously, it is all but impossible with a tape measurer.
    Thank you. submitted by /u/sage2791

    NewHAM lf base station recommendations

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 10:25 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2ko2c/newham_lf_base_station_recommendations/

Hello everyone! Im scheduled to take my tech license in a couple weeks
which Im excited for. Ive been listening to my local repeaters on my UV5R,
but I know not to really TX with this thing. With that being said, Id like
to start looking into setting up a little station at home. Budget and labor
are a limiting factor for me, so ideally finding like a well rounded
machine sub 500 apx ~$300 would be ideal. I dont think I can really find something thats HF in this range, but if there is, thats a plus. I scanned through some pinned threads but didnt see a recommended hardware list. Any
good advice will be well received. Cant wait to get my call sign and make
    some contacts. submitted by /u/SldgeHammr

Is being able to receive 160 meters worth it?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 01:32 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w29fjf/is_being_able_to_receive_160_meters_worth_it/

Hi, Im designing a mag loop antenna and Im trying to figure out if I should have receive capability for 160 meters? As the capacitance required for it
as a lot around, 2200 microfarads to 5800 microfarads. Where as for 80
meters 1600 microfarads is a good upper limit. Since this is a takedown
loop that uses coaxial cable as the primary loop Im not limited by length
but by the availability of vacuum variable capacitors. So should I consider listening to 160 or would 10-80 meters, including the WARC bands. Good
enough for portable operations and listening? Any advice would be greatly appreciated sincerely the OP?
Edit: replace micro with pico submitted by /u/Independent_3

9:1 unun or 49:1 unun in a wire antenna

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 07:17 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2h2h3/91_unun_or_491_unun_in_a_wire_antenna/

Ive seen multiple designs for wire antennas where a long wire is connected
to either a 9:1 transformer or a 49:1 transformer (such as this one and
this one). I dont want to build anything so I aim to buy either the LDG
49:1 or LDG 9:1. I am thinking of buying a tuner either way. Without going
into too much antenna theory, which one should I buy? Also is it actually
as simple as I think it is (connecting a wire to the transformer and
connecting this to a tuner/radio)? submitted by /u/Round-Environment955

    Question about Yaesu FTM-300D

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 06:55 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2glj4/question_about_yaesu_ftm300d/

I was curious if anyone has purchased an FTM-300D from Japan and loaded the
US firmware in it? I’m tempted to try it since there’s a significant cost difference but if it doesn’t work, I assume the FTM-200DR is just as good, minus the dual receive? submitted by /u/pabutt

Is a subscription to RF Finder worth it or would a free repeater directory
    like Repeater Book suffice?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 11:18 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w268hn/is_a_subscription_to_rf_finder_worth_it_or_would/

I mean, the subscription is pretty cheap, but if I can achieve 80%+ of RF Finders capabilities with a free resource, Id rather do that. submitted

    Receiving/Transmitting antennas proximity

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 04:49 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2dzbu/receivingtransmitting_antennas_proximity/

I hoping the community can help me with a general antenna question. I have
two antennas spaced about 8ft apart that are receiving signal from wireless microphones about 100ft away. I am thinking of installing a separate transmitting antenna in between the first two to send the signal out to speakers. All the antennas are 1/2 wavelength.
Basically these are two entirely separate antennas systems working
alongside each other, one to receive a signal, the other to transmit a
    signal out.
The receiving antennas spaced 8ft apart are operating around 650MHz, and
the transmitting antenna in the middle would be at around 500MHz.
My biggest concern would be that the transmitting antenna would cause interference for the receiving antennas close by to it.
Does this sound feasible? What would the minimum distance between the
antennas need to be for this work without interference? submitted by /u/bagonta

    APRS help

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 02:33 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w2avru/aprs_help/

I am interested in getting 2 radios with APRS capabilities, one handheld
and one vehicle mount. What is the best combo? I am mostly interested in
both being able to see relative to one another direction/elevation
differences. From what Ive been reading these are my options: Ft5DR and
FTM-400 Yaesu, or ID-52A and ID-5100 ICOM, it appears that kenwood has very limited supplies. Is it better to stay with one brand instead of mixing and matching? I believe ICOM uses D-PRS not entirely sure how this is
different, Im assuming Digital vs Analog signal.
One better than the other, Easier? I am tech savvy, however, for some
reason or another radios are not in my wheelhouse. submitted by

Radioditty DB25D out of range recieving.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2022 01:08 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w28va1/radioditty_db25d_out_of_range_recieving/

Has anybody figured out how to RECIEVE ONLY outside the allowed frequency
band on the radioditty DB25D? I know the trick with the anytone portables
has been to export as a CSV and import and the programming software would
allow the frequency, but that does not seem to be the case here. Any
    solutions available? submitted by /u/dhwrockclimber
