to his wife Rose, ZS5RR; Don, ZS5DR and the family in New Zealand and
South Africa.

THE SARL HF PHONE CONTEST THIS AFTERNOON

The SARL HF Phone Contest will be on the air from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC this
afternoon. The activity is spread over three periods - 20 m betwe
en 14:00 and 14:30 UTC, 40 m between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC and 80 m betwee
n 16:30 and 17:00 UTC. The 20 m frequency segment is correct in the Blue B
ook - it has been like that for more than 20 years. You have a cho
ice of four categories of participation. YL and Youth participants are ask
ed to mark their log sheets with YL or Youth. If you wrote the RAE in Octo
ber 2021 or May 2022, please add your exam date to your log sheet. All t
he information is on page 62 of the 2022 SARL Contest Manual. Please read
the rules before the contest and check the General Rules for what a singl
e operator and multi-operator is. Don't just give away points, s
ubmit your log!

THE NARC IS CLOSED ON MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY

Kelley Dorey has informed that SARL News Team that the National Amateur Ra
dio Centre will be closed on Monday 8 and Wednesday 10 August. The office
will be open on Thursday 11 August.

GIVING BACK TO THE CLUBS

At the Council meeting on 19th July, two requests for funds from the Clu
b Scheme (Motion 2022-05 of the 2022 AGM) were discussed. The Secunda ARC
will be supported for their Lesotho DXpedition in November and Bernie,
ZS4TX, will be supported for the D2TX EME DXpedition to Angola in Augus
t.

COMPETITION NEWS

The second leg of the SARL YL QSO Party runs from 12:00 to 13:00 UTC on Tu esday 9 August - Women's Day. The exchange is a RS(T) report and Y
L or OM. It is a CW and phone QSO Party on the 40-metre band. Contacts bet
ween YL stations are worth 6 points; between YL and OM stations are worth
3 points and between OM stations are worth 1 point. Logs in ADIF, Cabri
llo or MS Excel must be submitted by 21:59 UTC on Sunday 14 August 2022 by
e-mail to zs3vdk@webmail.co.za (mailto:zs3vdk@webmail.co.za) .

The second leg of the SARL Youth QSO Party will run from 12:00 to 13:00 UT
C on Saturday 13 August, celebrating International Youth Day on 12 Augus
t. This is a CW and phone QSO Party on the 40-metre band and the exchange
is a RS(T) report and the operator's age. Contacts between statio
ns 26 and younger are worth 5 points; between stations under 26 and over 2
6 are worth 2 points and between stations 27 and older are worth 1 point.

0 m between 14:00 and 14:30 UTC, 40 m between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC and 80
m between 16:30 and 17:00 UTC.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are currently 4 sunspots with simple magnetic con figurations visible. There is a low probability for C-class and a very low
probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your own frequency pre dictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be aro
und 52. The 15 to 30 m bands may provide some good DX fun, especially in

gaan wees. Tans is daar 4 sonvlekke met eenvoudige magnetiese samestellin
gs sigbaar. Daar is 'n lae waarskynlikheid vir die voorkoms van C-klas fak
kels en 'n baie lae moontlikheid van M-klas sonfakkels. Diegene wat hulle
eie frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe sonvle ktelling van 52 vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan veral laatmiddag
goeie DX openinge op die 15 tot 30 m bande verwag. Besoek gerus die webtu
