    THE ZS1 QSO PARTY THIS AFTERNOON

    The last provincial QSO Party for the year is on the air this afternoon. T
    he ZS1 QSO Party will run from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC this afternoon with the
    aim of stations outside the Western Cape to work as many ZS1 stations as
    possible! The contest is a CW and phone activity. Please note that 7,10
    0 to 7,130 MHz is a contest-free segment. The exchange is an RS or RST r
    eport and your provincial or country abbreviation. Submit your Excel log s

    THE SANDTON POWER HOUR TECH TALK ON 29 SEPTEMBER

    You are reminded that the next Sandton ARC Power Hour Tech Talk will take
    place from 19:00 CAT on Thursday 29 September, call-in will start at 18
    :45. The topic is "Using the Moon as a Ping Pong buddy" or
    , as it may be more commonly known, EME, Earth Moon Earth or Moon bo
    unce. Our special guest is Pine, ZS6OB, the first person in Africa and
    the second person in the Southern Hemisphere to achieve a DXCC on 144 MHz
    using EME. Connect to this very interesting conversation on the 145,700

    PROPOSED NEXT-GENERATION RADIO FREQUENCY SPECTRUM POLICY

    The Minister of Communication recently published the draft next-generation
    frequency policy and has invited comments. Amateur Radio is mentioned in
    the passing. It was published in the Government Gazette on 6 September,
    with a final date for comment within 30 working days.

    The SARL is currently studying the document for opportunities to increase
    the visibility of amateur radio by highlighting the contribution amateur
    radio is making to technology advancement and its contribution to the kno wledge economy of South Africa. You are invited to study the policy and ma

    The first few videos of the presentation at the AMSATSA Space Symposium ar

    r, ZS6ALN, will point you in the right direction to get the most out o

    THE FIRST 40 MHZ SSB CONTACT BETWEEN THE UK AND SOUTH AFRICA

    The Southgate ARC News reports that Paul, G7PUV, has tweeted a video o
    f his 40 MHz SSB contact with Willem, ZS6WAB, in Polokwane, South Af
    rica. On Saturday 17 September 2022, Paul tweeted this about his Trans E quatorial Propagation contact, "In contact with Willem, ZS6WAB
    earlier this afternoon via TEP on 40 MHz and the first ZS-G contact using
    SSB."

    In South Africa, the 40 MHz (8 m) band may be used by ZS and ZR licence
    holders. Radio amateurs have a primary allocation of 40,675 to 40,685
    MHz and can run a maximum of 10 Watts ERP using Machine Generated Modes f
    or propagation study. (ICASA Notice 890 of 2008).

    CONTEST NEWS

    The second leg of the Antique Wireless Association Valve QSO Party takes p
    lace on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October. This is a phone only contest usin
    g AM and SSB on 40 and 80 metres. The AM QSO Party runs from 13:00 to 17:0
    0 UTC on Saturday 1 October 2022 and the SSB QSO Party runs from 13:00 to
    17:00 UTC on Sunday 2 October. The exchange is your call sign, an RS re
    port, a consecutive serial number starting at 001, and the type of rad
    io you are using. The log sheets must be submitted by 21:59 UTC on Friday
    7 October to andyzs6ady@vodamail.co.za (mailto:andyzs6ady@vodamail.co.za)

    The second leg of the SARL 80 m QSO Party will be on the air from 17:00 to
    19:00 UTC on Thursday 6 October. Remember that the segment from 3 651 to

    PROPAGATION REPORT

    Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that solar activity is expected to be
    at low to moderate levels. There are currently 5 sunspots with simple to
    complex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probability for
    C-class and a low probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your
    own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for th
    e week will be around 76. The 10 to 30 m bands will, especially late aft ernoon, provide some good DX fun. For more information, please visit t
