THE 2023 SARL CONTEST MANUAL AND THE DIARY OF EVENTS
The two documents have been uploaded to the SARL web site, to the Contes
t page at www.sarl.org.za/public/contests/contestrules.asp - 2023 SARL Con
test Manual V0 DRAFT and DRAFT 2023 Diary of Events 15 November 2022. Plea
se download a copy of each and work through them. Clubs hosting contests
, please check that the dates are correct and that the e-mail address fo
r log submissions are correct. You are invited to provide the SARL Contest
Working Group with your comments, suggestions and updates to the contes
ts. No, you cannot suggest new contests, you had time until August to
do that, but the Working Group will look at updates suggested. The WG w
ould like to receive your feedback by 21:59 UTC on Wednesday 30 November 2

AMSAT SA AND THE SARL TO HOST A SPACE WEATHER WEBINAR ON 3 DECEMBER 2022

South Africa has a new 24-hour, state-of-the-art regional Space Weather
Centre in Hermanus in the Western Cape. Early warnings and space weather
forecasts are crucial for protecting satellites, national power grids
, communications and navigation systems from the harmful effects of sola
r storms and other space weather phenomena which are a toll to forecast HF
communication conditions

South Africa's new 24-hour, state-of-the-art regional Space Weather Cent
re was launched in Hermanus on Thursday 3 November 2022. To celebrate this
important development, AMSATSA and the SARL are hosting a SANSA Space W
eather webinar under the title "The journey towards an operational
space weather capability for Africa" and focussing on "Sp
ace weather impacts on HF - communications planning." The main spe
aker will be Dr Lee-Anne McKinnell, ZS1LAW, managing director of the S
ANSA Space Sciences headquarters in Hermanus, Western Cape and supported
by researchers at the Space Weather Centre. The webinar will be presented
from 10:00 - 13:00 CAT on Saturday 3 December 2022 on the BlueJeans Platf

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are currently 4 sunspots with simple magnetic con figurations visible. There is a moderate probability for C-class and a low
probability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your own frequency pre dictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be aro
und 61. The 15 to 30 m bands may provide some good DX fun, especially in
