It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of Des van Schalkwyk
, ZR6JET, went silent on Sunday 25 December 2022. He was a member of t
he Pretoria ARC. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Sanette,
family, and friends.

NEW RF SPECTRUM LICENSE FEES

During last week, ICASA issued licence renewals for the 2023/24 licence
year. Unfortunately, the notification to renew was sent out prematurely
. At the time, the increase in fees had not been populated in the ICASA
system and any invoice issued would have reflected an incorrect fee. The
Authority therefore closed the renewal process. Any renewals paid on thes
e notifications will be honoured by ICASA.

Licensees will receive another notification at the beginning of February f
or the renewal process to proceed. The annual increase is 6.9% and will be
as follows - the fee for a one-year licence increases from R 166.00 to R
177.00; a two-year licence increases from R 317.00 to R 338.00; a three-y
ear licence increases from R 455.00 to R 485.00; a four-year licence incre
ases from R 579.00 to R 618.00 and a five-year licence increases from R 69
2.00 to R 738.00.

It is important to note that renewals need to be paid before Saturday 1 Ap
ril 2023 as unpaid licences will expire after this date.

THE SARL RESPONSE TO THE DRAFT NEXT-GENERATION SPECTRUM POLICY

On Monday 23 January, the SARL successfully made an oral representation
to the Department of Digital Communications and Digital Services via a Te
ams meeting on the draft spectrum policy as issued by the Minister of Digi
tal Communications and Digital technologies. The League had a time slot of
half an hour. The chairman, Mr. Dick Sono of the Spectrum team, thank
ed the SARL for taking the time to contribute to the draft policy.

A FINAL CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SARL AWARDS AND TROPHIES

The closing date for nominations for awards and trophies and AGM motions i
s midnight on Tuesday 31 January 2023. Response to date has been dismal! T
he information about the awards and trophies and the call for motions went
out on 4 September 2022 via a SARL communication. The information was als
o included in the October, November, and December 2022 and January 202
3 issues of Radio ZS. To date, only three award nominations have been re ceived.

CONTESTING IN FEBRUARY

The Contest hosts are once again reminded of Rule 2 of the General Contest
Rules, found on page 9 of the 2023 SARL Contest Manual. The following c ontests take place in February - 4 February, the SARL VHF/UHF FM
Activity Day; 5 February, the AWA CW Activity Day; 12 February, the H
amSatSA QO-100 QSO Party; 15 February - the SARL 80 m Club contest and 26
February, the SARL Digital Contest

Over the weekend of 11 and 12 February, there are two digital contests y
ou can take part in. The CQ WPX RTTY contest runs from 00:00 UTC on Saturd
ay 11 until 23:59 UTC on Sunday 12 February and the rules can be found at

JOIN THE SARL AT THE HALF-YEAR RATE

Join the SARL and pay the half-year rate. The Council decided to institute
the half-year rate from Sunday 1 January 2023. Ordinary members pay R250
, senior members pay R150, spouse members pay R90, while student mem
bers pay R60. The online membership application form is at , fill it in

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that solar activity is expected to be
at low levels. There are currently eight sunspots with simple to complex
magnetic configurations visible. There is a moderate probability for C-cl
ass and a low probability for M-class solar flares. If you want to do your
own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for th
e week will be around 109. The 10 to 30 m bands will provide some good DX

OKOSA het verlede week lisensiehernuwings vir die 2023/24-lisensiejaar uit gereik. Ongelukkig is die kennisgewing om te hernu voortydig uitgestuur. D estyds was die verhoging in fooie nie in die OKOSA-stelsel ingevul nie en
enige faktuur wat uitgereik is, sou 'n verkeerde fooi weerspieël h
et. Die Owerheid het dus die hernuwingsproses gesluit. Enige hernuwings wa
t op hierdie kennisgewings betaal word, sal deur OKOSA eerbiedig word.

Lisensiehouers sal aan die begin van Februarie nog 'n kennisgewing ontvang
sodat die hernuwingsproses kan voortgaan. Daardie jaarlikse verhoging is
6,9% en sal soos volg wees - die fooi vir 'n een jaar-lisensie styg van
R 166.00 tot R 177.00; 'n twee jaar-lisensie styg van R 317.00 tot R 338.
00; 'n drie jaar-lisensie styg van R 455.00 tot R 485.00; 'n vier jaar-lis ensie styg van R 579.00 tot R 618.00 en 'n vyf jaar-lisensie styg van R 69

DIE SARL REAKSIE OP DIE KONSEP VOLGENDE GENERASIE SPEKTRUMBELEID

Op Maandag 23 Januarie het die SARL suksesvol 'n mondelinge voorlegging aa
n die Departement van Digitale Kommunikasie en Digitale Dienste gerig via
'n â-˜Teams' vergadering oor die konsepspektrumbeleid soos
uitgereik deur die Minister van Digitale Kommunikasie en Digitale tegnolo gieë. Die Liga het 'n tydgleuf van 'n halfuur gehad. Die voorsitter
, mnr Dick Sono van die Spektrum-span, het die SARL bedank dat hy die
tyd geneem het om by te dra tot die konsepbeleid.

'N FINALE OPROEP VIR NOMINASIES VIR SARL-TOEKENNINGS EN TROFEë

Die sluitingsdatum vir nominasies vir toekennings en trofeë en vir AJ
V-mosies is middernag op Dinsdag 31 Januarie 2023. Reaksie tot op datum wa
s treurig! Die inligting oor die toekennings en trofeë en die oproep
vir mosies het op 4 September 2022 via 'n SARL-kommunikasie uitgegaan. Di
e inligting is ook ingesluit in die Oktober, November en Desember 2022 e
n Januarie 2023 uitgawes van Radio ZS. Tot op hede is slegs drie toekennin
gs nominasies ontvang.

m die halfjaartarief vanaf Sondag 1 Januarie 2023 in te stel. Gewone lede

gaan wees. Tans is daar agt sonvlekke met eenvoudige tot gevorderde magne tiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n redelike waarskynlikheid vir die v oorkoms van C-klas fakkels en 'n lae waarskynlikheid vir M-klas fakkels. D iegene wat hulle eie frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte e ffektiewe sonvlektelling van 109 vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan
