    We begin this bulletin with the news of two silent keys.

    It is with deep regret that we must announce that the key of Johannes van
    Zijl, ZS4DZ went silent on Sunday 29 January 2023. He wrote the RAE in
    1989 and obtained the call sign ZR4DZ which he later upgraded to ZS4DZ. J
    ohan worked in the Electrical Department of the Ficksburg Municipality and
    later he worked as an electrical contractor in the Ficksburg area. He use
    d wire antennas for each HF band from 160 to 10 metres and 100 Watts outpu
    t, he was active in all the contests and award schemes. He was the holde
    r of the WAZS-1500 as well as a WAZS on 60 metres. We extend our sincere c ondolences to his wife and family, his brother Jerry, ZS2TL/ZS6BTL and
    many friends.

    It is with deep regret that we announce that the key of Jaap van der Linde
    ZS3JP (ZS1JP), went silent on Friday 3 February 2023. He was a founder
    member of the Northern Cape Amateur Radio Club and became a Life Member i
    n 2014. He motivated many members and was always calm and helpful. We exte
    nd our sincere condolences to his wife, family and friends.

    AWA CW ACTIVITY DAY TODAY

    The aim of the CW Activity Day is for participants to contact as many amat
    eurs as possible on the 20, 40 and 80 m amateur bands from 13:00 to 15:0
    0 UTC. You can participate as a Single Operator All Band - Low Pow
    er (maximum 100 W); a Single operator All Band - QRP (Maximum 5 W)
    ; a Single Operator Single Band - Low Power (maximum 100 W); a Single ope rator, single band - QRP (maximum 5 W) or a Short Wave Listener
    (SWL). The exchange is an RST report, your call sign and grid square lo
    cator. The rules can be found on page 50 of the SARL contest manual.

    ZS SOTA - 20 YEARS - TIME TO CELEBRATE

    SOTA in ZS has now been active for 20 years, we joined the SOTA fraterni
    ty on 1 January 2003, the first two summits were activated by Andrew Roo
    s, ZS1AN (now ZS5U) on 1 January 2003. Maclear's Beacon, ZS/WC-043 wi
    th 15 DX and 1 ZS QSO and then Lions' Head, ZS/WC-058 with 10 DX QSOs an
    d all on CW.

    After discussions with the ZS SOTA group, it was decided that 18 Februar
    y would be a good day to celebrate the 20th anniversary. This day is open
    to all radio amateurs to join in the fun of either activating a summit or
    chasing the activators. Activators are requested to post their proposed t
    imes on the ZS-SOTA WhatsApp Group and Facebook page. A certificate of par ticipation will be issued.

    If you have never activated a summit and want more information, contact
    Sid Tyler, ZS5AYC on mobile 082 461 3279 and he will put you in contact
    with someone in your area.

    CONTEST NEWS

    Participants in the SARL Saturday 40 m Club Contest are requested to resub
    mit their log sheets to contest@sarl.org.za (mailto:contest@sarl.org.za) w
    ith a new closing date of 21:59 UTC on Thursday 9 February. There was some
    confusion as to who should be receiving the log sheets.

    Six logs were received for the PEARS National VHF/UHF Contest held on 13 t
    o 16 January.
    1st Andre Botes, ZS2ACP - 3 040 points
    2nd Corne Conradie, ZS1COR - 1 815 points
    3rd Phil McClean, ZS1WW - 1 302 points
    The longest distance on a band was 882 km between Andre, ZS2ACP and Dick
    , ZS6BUN on 6 metres.

    Fourteen logs were received for the SARL Summer QRP contest held on 21 Jan uary.
    1st Kobus Boshoff, ZS6BOS - 1350 points
    2nd Jacques Louw, ZS4WW and Anthony Williams, ZS6WT - 180 points
    4th Mark Walker, ZS6MDX - 144 points.

    PROPAGATION REPORT

    Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
    be at low levels. There are currently three sunspots with simple magnetic
    configurations visible. There is a moderate probability for C-class and a
    low probability for M-class solar flares. If you want to do your own freq uency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week wi
    ll be around 93. The 10 to 30 m bands will provide some good DX fun. Pleas

    na ZS4DZ. Johan het in die Elektriese Afdeling van die Ficksburg Munisipa liteit gewerk en later het hy as elektriese kontrakteur in die Ficksburg a
    rea gewerk. Hy het draad antennas vir elke HF-band van 160 tot 10 meter en
    100 Watt-uitset gebruik, hy was aktief in al die kompetisies en toekenn
    ing skemas. Hy was die houer van die WAZS-1500 sowel as 'n WAZS op 60 mete
    r. Ons betuig ons innige meegevoel met sy vrou en familie, sy broer Jerr
    y, ZS2TL/ZS6BTL en baie vriende.

    RADIO ZS FEBRUARIE 2023

    Die Februarie 2023-uitgawe van Radio ZS is beskikbaar vir aflaai vanaf die
    Publikasies-kies lys op die SARL-webblad. Lees oor die Andalusië-dag
    diploma en die eerste ooit - Olivia Digitale Modus QSO Partytjie. Daar is
    drie verslae van die IARU Streek 1 oor hul werk wat lei na WRC-23. Ons ve

    ZS SOTA - 20 JAAR - TYD OM TE VIER

    SOTA in ZS is nou al 20 jaar aktief, ons het op 1 Januarie 2003 by die S OTA-broederskap aangesluit, die eerste twee pieke is geaktiveer deur And
    rew Roos, ZS1AN (nou ZS5U) op 1 Januarie 2003. Maclear's Beacon, ZS/WC
    -043 met 15 DX en 1 ZS QSO en dan Leeukop, ZS/WC-058 met 10 DX QSOs en a
    lmal op GG.

    Na samesprekings met die ZS SOTA-groep is daar besluit dat 18 Februarie 'n
    goeie dag sal wees om die 20ste bestaans jaar te vier. Hierdie dag is oop
    vir alle radioamateurs om deel te neem aan die pret om of 'n beraad te ak tiveer of die aktiveerders te jaag. Aktiveerders om hul voorgestelde tye o
    p die ZS-SOTA WhatsApp-groep en Facebook-bladsy te plaas. 'n Sertifikaat v
    an deelname sal uitgereik word.

    As jy nog nooit 'n piek geaktiveer het nie en meer inligting wil hê

    KOMPETISIE NUUS

    Deelnemers aan die SARL Saterdag 40 m-klub kompetisie word versoek om hul
    logstate weer in te dien by contest@sarl.org.za (mailto:contest@sarl.org.
    za) met 'n nuwe sluitingsdatum van 21:59 UTC op Donderdag 9 Februarie. Daa
    r was 'n bietjie verwarring oor wie die logstate moes ontvang.

    Ses logstate is ontvang vir die PEARS Nasionale BHF/UHF-kompetisie wat van
    13 tot 16 Januarie gehou is.

    2de Corne Conradie, ZS1COR - 1 815 punte

    Die langste afstand gewerk op 'n band was tussen Andre, ZS2ACP en Dick

    Veertien logs is ontvang vir die SARL Somer QRP-kompetisie wat op 21 Janua
    rie gehou is.

    HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING

    Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak laag
    gaan wees. Tans is daar drie sonvlekke met eenvoudige magnetiese samestel lings sigbaar. Daar is 'n redelike waarskynlikheid vir die voorkoms van C-
    klas fakkels en 'n lae waarskynlikheid vir M-klas fakkels. Diegene wat hul
    le eie frekwensie voorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe son vlektelling van 93 vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan goeie DX openi
