News from the IRTS
The IRTS celebrated its 91st Annual AGM Weekend over the weekend of the
13th and 14th of April 2024. The venue for this year's event was once
again the Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway with the Shannon
Basin Radio Club again hosting the event this year. A great weekend was
had by all who attended and the IRTS wish to thank everyone for coming
along over the weekend. The weekend kicked off on Saturday afternoon
with a series of very interesting workshop type talks on various
aspects of the hobby.
A wonderful Gala Dinner took place on the Saturday night with close on
90 people attending. The IRTS was honoured to have RSGB President John
McCullagh MBE, GI4BWM, his wife Grace and Senator Aisling Dolan in
attendance at the dinner. MC for the evening Seany EI2HZB started the
evening by inviting Fr. Foley EI4CF to say grace. Seany then invited
IRTS President Enda EI2II to speak.
Enda welcomed all to the dinner and thanked John, Grace, and Aisling
for coming. RSGB president John then addressed the room and thanked the
IRTS for inviting him to the function. He expressed his delight at
having the opportunity to attend the talks earlier in the day and in
finishing, he gave us a brief update on the new changes recently
introduced by Ofcom to the UK amateur licence conditions.
Senator Aisling Dolan then spoke on how we need to engage with youth as
youth is the future. She also spoke on the importance of reaching out
to young people. During the evening, Enda made a special presentation
to Rory Hinchy EI4DJB to thank him for his 30 years of unbroken service
to the society. The Saturday evening activities finished off with the
presentation of some of the service awards for 2024 to various people.
Following a great Shannon Basin Radio Club rally on Sunday morning, the
2024 IRTS AGM took place on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. with close on 70
members attending. The meeting was chaired by President Enda EI2II.
Following reports from IRTS treasurer David EI3IXB and IRTS secretary
Owen EI4GGB, the committee for 2024 was then elected. As there were no
other nominations received for any of the committee positions, the
committee nominated positions as posted in the spring edition of Echo
Ireland were elected. Brendan Lynch EI6GA who had been an auditor of
the society for many years had indicated some time ago that he wished
to retire from that role.
The IRTS wish to thank Brendan for his sterling service to the society
over many years and we wish him well for the future. The vacant auditor
position was then filled by Ralph EI2KU. IRTS President Enda in his
speech thanked everyone for their help and support over the past year.
He also thanked the many volunteers who do so much work in the
background to keep the IRTS going. Enda also spoke of the many
different events both nationally and internationally he had attended
over the previous 12 months in his role as IRTS President.
Enda concluded by saying that the 2025 IRTS AGM weekend will be held in
Carlow over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of April and will be
hosted by the EI2WRC group. The day finished off with the remaining
trophies presented to competition winners and other award winners for
2023. A full list of the new committee for 2024, other roles, and award
winners for 2024 will be available soon on the IRTS website.
The next IRTS Committee meeting, which will be a physical meeting, will
take place on Saturday, May 4th at 11:00 a.m. sharp in the Maldron
Hotel, Abbeyleix Rd, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, Eircode R32 HKN3. All IRTS
affiliated clubs are reminded that under Rule 16.1, the members in each
affiliated club, society, or other body, may elect a representative and
an alternate annually to attend IRTS Committee meetings both physical
and online. Clubs wishing to send a representative should notify the
