Silent Keys - John Reddington EI8AJ, Frank Cox EI3CT, and Leo McHugh EI8BR

We regretfully learned of the death of Sean (John) Reddington EI8AJ on
April 19th, 2024. John was involved in the hobby since the early 1960s
where his station QTH was listed as the Air Corp Technical Wing in
Baldonnell at that time. He died peacefully in the care of the staff at
St Francis Hospice, Raheny, Dublin. We extend our sympathies to his
wife Mary, his children Anne, Aileen, Paraic, and his extended family.
    May John rest in peace.

We also regret to report the death of Frank Cox EI3CT which occurred on
April 21st, 2024. Late of Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, Frank passed away in
Waterford University Hospital. We extend our deepest sympathies to his
wife Helen of 56 years, his son Robert, daughter Deirdre, and his wide
circle of family and friends. May Frank rest in peace.

We were also saddened to learn of the death of Leo McHugh EI8BR on
April 25th. Leo was well known within the hobby. He was a former
recipient of the IRTS Collins Cup for providing excellent CW training
in the South Dublin Radio Club. He was the beloved husband of the late
Ann. We pass our sincerest condolences to his sons Nigel and Ken as
well as his extended family. May Leo rest in peace.

International Marconi Day celebrated at Ye Olde Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage Radio

International Marconi Day was celebrated at Ye Olde Hurdy Gurdy Museum
of Vintage Radio at the Martello Tower in Howth on Saturday 27th of
April. This year is a very special one, as it is the 150th anniversary
of the birth of Marconi. EI0MAR was QRV on CW and SSB throughout the
day. Band conditions weren't great, and the bulk of contacts made on
the 20m band. Several other IMD award stations were worked on 40m also.
The museum extends a big thank you to their amateur visitors and
operators who made it a special day.

The Martello Tower has the distinction of being the location for
wireless telegraphy tests carried out by the Marconi Company in 1905.
Two years previously, Lee de Forrest demonstrated his wireless
telegraphy system to engineers from the British Post Office from the
Martello contacting another station set up in Holyhead. From Tuesday
next, the museum will revert to summer opening hours, from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. Entry is EUR5 for adults and EUR3 for students. Children go free.

Mills on the Air and 145 Alive with Collective Communication EI3CC

Next weekend, May 11th and 12th, Collective Communication EI3CC will be
operating from the Tacumshane windmill in Co Wexford, Eircode Y35 ET89
for the Mills on the Air weekend.

Operating on HF, VHF, and UHF, EI3CC will be using their mobile R.C.U.
for operation over the weekend. On Saturday, 11th May, Collective
Communication will also be participating in the 145 Alive activity so
listen out for EI3CC on 145.475MHz FM. It should make for a busy day
with participation in both events. The club had a great many visitors
at Mills on the Air last year. The mill owner and the club are very
much hoping that this year will prove to be the same. If club members
or visitors get hungry, the Meyler bar and restaurant is conveniently
situated next to the windmill to satisfy anyone's nutritional
    requirements.

A couple of weeks later on May 26th, Collective Communication will be
back in Tramore Co Waterford promoting amateur radio and raising funds
for the RNLI during their SOS Radio Week 2024. This year celebrates the
200th anniversary of the RNLI. Currently Collective Communication is
the only Irish station registered to participate in this event.

As always, if you want to know more about these events or Collective
Communication in general phone the club's secretary, John EI3HQB on 086

145 Alive takes place next weekend

145 Alive is a fun event aimed at increasing VHF activity and portable
operation. It takes place next Saturday 11th May from 13:00 to 15:00
local time on 2m FM simplex. It's an all-Ireland and UK event.
Currently, fifteen control stations will be active around Ireland
    including three in Northern Ireland.

The idea is you contact your nearest control station, and they will try
and put you in touch with other callers, rather like a fast and furious
net. You can then try and call into another controller, if one is
within range, and make more contacts. Please pass the word around and
join in the fun next Saturday. All that is needed is a simple 2m
    handheld.

AMSAT Italia Enters into Ownership of IO-117 GreenCube Satellite

AMSAT Italia announced their acquisition of the IO-117 GreenCube
satellite. This move averts the satellite decommissioning process that
was signposted for last February by transferring the legal
responsibility of the satellite from the Italian Space Agency to AMSAT
Italia. GreenCube is a hugely popular amateur radio digipeater and is
the first ham radio satellite to operate in a medium earth orbit.
Orbiting at altitude in excess of 5800 km, it has a very large
footprint making it possible to work stations as far as South America
and Japan from Ireland on the 70cm band during suitable passes.
