Yesterday, September 12, 2023, a curious incident occurred during the Euro qualifier between Romania and Kosovo. The match took place in Bucharest.
A group of Romanian ultras displayed a banner that read “Kosovo = Serbia”. They also cheered “Serbia, Serbia!” Romania is NOT Serbia, of course. The behavio(u)r of that particular group of Romanian ultras was an act of revenge.
The Kosovar ultras behaved even WORSE during the first-leg match between Kosovo and Romania played in June in Pristina. The Kosovars jeered during the Romanian national anthem. They also shouted “Gypsies!” to offend the Romanians. UEFA had absolutely
NO reaction to the behavior of the Kosovo football ultras.
Yet, during the first sfârtai of an hour of the match in Bucharest, the Kosovo players simply refused to play and ran to the locker rooms! The referee stopped the match, although there was no basis for such a decision. There were no racist chants
involved in order to interrupt the game! The game resumed after 50 minutes.
I accuse UEFA, not the Romanian federation, first and foremost. It is UEFA who mixes football and politics. UEFA forced all European teams participating in the UEFA-organized competitions to display huge banners of Ukraine’s colo(u)rs. Also, messages
like “MIR! FREE UKRAINE!” That’s POLITICS!
No political body, no military organization, has a right to double standards. Therefore, what a group of Romanian ultras did was IN LINE with what UEFA has done for some time now. I do NOT condone their act, however. The ultras were aware of potentially
bad consequences for Team Romania and the federation. If they want to express their political feelings, just go to the embassies of Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland (the host of UEFA), and even Kosovo. Oops! Kosovo does not exist in Rockmania!
I oppose the acts of both sides. DO NOT APPLY DOUBLE STANDARDS! DO NOT MIX POLITICS AND SPORTS, REGARDLESS!
Pardon me for the repetition, Frau UEFA! SHAME ON UEFA! DO NOT MIX POLITICS AND SPORTS, REGARDLESS! You see what can happen.
