From Binder Dundat@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 7 14:59:36 2024
I was ready to say the Pretenders are back, but once again Bayer comes
through. Now granted, they were playing against a team no one has ever
heard of from a country from who knows where? I mean, I am pretty sure
it is not in Europe, possibly Asia, maybe Arctica?

I didn't see how Qaraba went up 2-0, I tuned in around the time Florian
Wirtz came on and he then single-handedly rescued the point for Bayer
and keeps them undefeated this season. Once again a late goal saves
Bayer from being the Pretenders and that has happened so many times this
season as well. Can they go undefeated for the rest of the season?
Probably not, but they have 10 points on bayern and you know bayern will
drop points. Dont let that win vs Lazio fool you into believing bayern
is back. Lazio played to hold Bayern instead of going after them and
that is why they lost, also they just are not very good.

I suppose what this does show is that Leverkusen are not a deep squad,
they need their top players, Alonso looked to have rested a bunch for
this match, which is 10 time zones away from Germany, so I kinda get
that, but they just cant do it without the core players. Can you
imagine if Freiburg was playing Qarabag, they would be peddling those
bikes for months! I mean come on, it is closer to China than Europe! I
think they are closer to Australia than Europe????

We will continue this watch to see if bayer can pull of the first
undefeated season ever in the history of football!

Well, Leverkusen last played there in November so they might have
    remembered.

I‘ve got to say it sucks a bit that the draw turned out two ties (also Sporting-Atalanta) that have already taken place in the group stages. But it’s the last time that that could have happened anyway.

    Ciao,

You can pretty much take this post and re-post it for today's match,
except go one better as they score 3 to avoid having to go to ET. They
were down 2-0 with 20 mins left and looked like going out, but once
again in very un-pretnder like fashion they pull off the win. Now
granted they beat this team form who knows where in the group stage 6-1
on agg. so it should have been easier, but the end result is what matters.

I want to say Bayer are new Champions, the equation proves it is, our projections have them winning the liga, but deep down inside, I still
cant help but think of the Pretenders. But 8 games left and a 10 point lead, what could possibly go wrong?

Bayer beat Freiburg today 3-2, which is not that interesting, what is interesting is that Streich may be hanging up the bicycle?

Yep, he’s cycling into the sunset at the end of the season.

Historical precedent would suggest that Freiburg will now blunder through
four seasons before they find their next decennial manager.

Once again, in what seems a normal occurrence, bayer win with goals in
the 90th minute. Apparently Xabi will be back again next season as
well, probably end up getting fired next year. But enjoy it while you
can. Now lets see if the Pretenders can do it against Bayern.

Well they did it again. No amount of cheap penalty calls against them
is enough to stop this unbeaten run. At 2-0 I was saying they will come
back, even if I did not fully believe it, but at 2-1 you just knew they
would and to be fair they were the better team through out the game and
really deserved to be ahead anyhow/. But still, another 97 min goal
    secures the run.

The one worrying thing for Bayer and for the German National team, is
Wirtz. He came on with 10 minutes left, right before Bayer scored both
goals and he didnt really have too much to do with either goal, but you
could tell by his movements and running that there is something wrong
    with him injury-wise.

THere was a time when people referred to Leverkusen as The Pretenders or
called them Neverkusen and things like that. We at the BLW were
appalled so we started the Bayer Leverkusen Watch back in May 27 2023,
that was the day Bayer lost to Bochum, which was the last time Bayer
lost a game. It was also the last game of last season, had Bochum not
won, they would have needed to play a relegation play off to stay up in
the 1st div, they may or may not need the points to stay up this year?

I cant help but think this might be the crowning of the greatest team in
the history of the world. Can Bayer win the World Championship of the
World to be crowned the greatest team ever.

I dont even know who they are playing, but if that mystery team win,
they just win some obscure UEFA cup thing.

Honestly, I assume Bayer will win, just cus they always do, but part of
me thinks this might be the end of the BLW. :[

Next year we will do a Werder watch, it might last 2 weeks. Should do a
Hoff watch, they made Europa I think?

Anyhow, this is the biggest day in the history of football!!!! I mean
    club football of course.

lost a game.  It was also the last game of last season, had Bochum not
won, they would have needed to play a relegation play off to stay up in
the 1st div, they may or may not need the points to stay up this year?

Well they did it again.  No amount of cheap penalty calls against them

knew they would and to be fair they were the better team through out
the game and really deserved to be ahead anyhow/. But still, another
97 min goal secures the run.

The one worrying thing for Bayer and for the German National team, is
Wirtz.  He came on with 10 minutes left, right before Bayer scored
both goals and he didnt really have too much to do with either goal,
but you could tell by his movements and running that there is
    something wrong with him injury-wise.

We won it in 1971, 1977 and 1978. The Championship of a whole continent
is of far greater significance than the championship of a single
country anyway. Not to mention all the other international titles we
    won in that period.

It's just that I distinctly remember from one of our discussions about
the nature of the Champions League that you were adamant that teams
that hadn't won their domestic championship had no right to call
themselves best teams of Europe even if they won the Champions League
that year (like Dortmund could this year).

Your actual quote was: 'Haven't those teams already been proved to
not be the best team in Europe by failing to even win their domestic Championships?'

Independiente finished 11th, 4th, 8th, and 13th in those years, while
in the Copa Libertadores they also had the advantage of getting a bye
into the semifinal stage from 1973 to 1975, a boon that the actual
Argentine champions of those years didn't get.

I don't have a problem with any of this, but I am reasonably sure that
in other circumstances you would decry the unfairness of it all.

    Ciao,
    Werner

I don't have a problem with the Champions of Europe qualifying for the Champions League (at least, assuming they were Champions of their
country the year before they became Champions of Europe). The word
Champions WAS in the name of the tournament for a reason (I don't know
    why it still is).

I think it was fairer when the Champions League was only open to
domestic champions and the Champions of the continent.

Every time Independiente have won the Copa Libertadores we've qualified
for it either as Champions of Argentina or Champions of South America.

That’s all fine and correct. Doesn’t make them the
‘best team ever’ though. I only checked for 1975, but
in that year they had a combined record of 18-16-20
in the league and 4-0-3 in the Copa Libertadores?

I’m sorry, but that’s a far cry from the achievement of an undefeated domestic season in a top league
    like Leverkusen’s or Arsenal’s.

(also, if any team has a claim on that nonsensical
‘best ever’ moniker based on the results of one
season, it’s 1994-95 Ajax. Won both Eredivisie and
Champions League without a single defeat, only
    lost in the domestic cup.)

Marketing and hype... nothing more, nothing less.

If you think that's bad, wait until the 'new improved' FIFA
World Club Cup in the summer of 2025, which will include the
mighty (and mediocre) Chelsea FC... imagine if they became WORLD
    CHAMPIONS once again!

Although it is possible the mighty blues could be UEFA
Conference League Champions by the time they fly to the USA next
Summer for the FIFA Club World Cup tournament, so the term
'Champions' could be legitimately used then. Personally I think
    they should get
knocked out of that Mickey mouse UEFA Conference thing early on
and save their energies for the BIG one in June/July 2025. We
all know how seriously that tournament is rated here...

    See you next summer..
