From Real_Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 23 10:30:56 2024
The third and final round of group stage matches begins today. No more
mid afternoon kick offs from now on, which always makes me slightly sad
as it sort of marks the beginning of the end of the tournament.

Today's fixtures are from Group A:

    Switzerland - Germany

    Scotland Hungary

    Standings:

    1st Germany 6pts +6 GD

    2nd Switzerland 4pts + 2 GD

    3rd Scotland 1pt -4 GD

    4th Hungary 0pts -4 GD

    The teams respective situations:

Germany: Qualified but need a draw to guarantee first place (and
therefore probably avoid England in the next round)

Switzerland: Need a draw to qualify. A win would see them finish first.
Even if defeat they would finish second if Hungary and Scotland draw,
Hungary beat Scotland or Scotland beat Hungary but don't overcome the
    goal difference gap.

Scotland: Could in theory sneak through as a higher ranked third placed
team with a draw and if results in other groups go their way.
Realistically only a win will do. Even then their goal difference may be against them.

Hungary: Need to win to have any chance of finishing as a higher ranked
third placed team. Same issues with Scotland as to the goal difference.

The Germans sticking with the same line up. I didnt like J-Nag taking
    off Wirtz early last game.

I would have given Beier a start in this match, but I get keeping the
    team together.

Not a lot of quality on display so far.

    Switzerland 1 Germany 0

Ndoye gave Switzerland the lead on 28 minutes.

As things stand, Switzerland would win the group.

    Indeed, eurocroto, anyone?

Indeed. It’s a strange game in that both teams need to win, but so far
(65 minutes) are showing no sense of urgency or endeavour.

At least we got ROCK'N'ROLL the last 15-20 minutes!
    0-1 HUNGARY. 99' or so.

    FT:

    Scotland 0 - Hungary 1

There was 10 minutes injury time due to Hungary's Barnabas Varga needing treatment and being taken away to hospital after he fell awkwardly after
the Scottish keeper cleared a cross. It didn't look good and for a while
was reminiscent of the Eriksen situation from Euro 2020(1). In the last
10 minutes regulation + 10 minutes injury time both teams did pick up
the pace and had chances, but with basically the last move of the game
Hungary launched a counter attack from a Scotland corner which resulted
in a low pass from the right which Csoboth connected with to win the
match for Hungary and give them a chance of being a highest ranked third
    placed side.

    Switzerland 1 - Germany 1

Also with near enough the last move of the match, Fulkrug spared
Germany's blushes (and dispelled any rumours of "tournament management"
    - a loss would have put Germany into what some regard as the easier side
of the bracket) by heading in an equaliser to win the group for
    Germany.
