Group B comes to a conclusion today:

    Albania - Spain

    Croatia - Italy

    Group B current standings

    1st Spain 6pts +4 GD
    2nd Italy 3pts 0 GD
    3rd Albania 1pt -1 GD
    4th Croatia 1pt -3 GD

    The teams' respective situations:

Spain: Already guaranteed first place due to their better head to head
than Italy. Can play / test out reserves should they wish.

Italy: With their better head to head than Albania a draw would give
them second place. A narrow defeat would see them in contention for a
highest rank third place team spot.

Albania: A win (bearing in mind Spain might not have their strongest
team out) would see them reasonably confident of a highest ranked third
placed team spot. A draw would see them in contention for a a highest
ranked third placed team spot, although given Hungary would be ahead of
them in the rankings their chances would depend on England, Denmark,
Portugal and Turkey winning their final group matches.

Croatia: Pretty much the same outlook as Albania, although with a worse
goal difference their chances of going through in third place following
    a draw are decidedly slimmer.

Actually, to correct myself, Croatia's situation is slightly different
in that if they beat Italy and Albania lose Croatia would go through in
second place. Should Albania and Croatia both win which team takes
second place will come down to goal difference.

Spain (having already secured first place) rests 10 of its 11 starters
from the Italy match. Opposite approach to Nagelsmann, who kept made no
changes at all to the starting lineup.

Spalletti benches Chiesa, Scamacca and Frattesi, in come Raspadori,
    Retegui and Darmian. A switch to a 3-5-2 formation? We'll see. I have a
bad feeling about this. A good feeling for Croatia, that is.

3 minutes in, about 97% possession for Croatia.

Fox Sports commentator reminds us that Italy has only won once in nine
tries against Croatia (that's actually 0 in 8 in Croatia's modern
incarnation). A few years ago, Brazil was the only other team with a
winning record against Italy (now North Macedonia and Costa Rica added
    to the list?)

Five minutes in, Italy still unable to string together more than two
    passes, Donarrumma already tested once.

Italy the better team after the first 10 minutes. Bastoni with the best

Nah, we have a positive record v North Macedonia. As far as I can tell,
the NTs with which we have a negative record are Brazil, Spain, Croatia,
Costa Rica and USSR. We are tied with Argentina (used to have a large
lead, but they have won the past four encounters) and Slovakia. There

Italy and Croatia literally changed positions with the last kick of the

Croatia are not yet eliminated and could in theory be a highest ranked
third placed team. But they find themselves needing England, Denmark,
Portugal and Turkey to win their final group games and a swing in goal difference too (ITV mentioned England needing to beat Slovenia by three
for Croatia to have a chance).

Also, Romania and Slovakia are now *guaranteed* to advance to the second
round with a draw between them, regardless of what happens in any of the
other matches (they were already about 99% sure to make it with 4
    points, but now it's 100%).

Given that the potential for a Carpathian biscotto is so obvious, there
will be a lot of scrutiny around this match, so maybe it won't happen.
