• Euro 2024 Second Round MD 1: CHE - ITA, GER - DEN [R]

From Real_Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Fri Jun 28 21:18:20 2024
The second round starts on Saturday with Switzerland - Italy and Germany
    - Denmark.

How did Germany win their group but they don't get to play their next
game at the Olympiastadion? In fact, they haven't played there yet and
aren't scheduled to play there until the final. I remember in 1996
England played all their games at Wembley.

Anyway, I'm finding Switzerland - Italy too difficult to call so am
inclined to say draw at 90 minutes, wouldn't like to say what will
happen in extra time. Germany should have too much for Denmark, but then Denmark do seem to be good at getting draws. I could see this being a
draw at 90 minutes with Germany making the breakthrough in extra time?

Just how good does the Italian anthem sound in front of a packed out Olympiastadion?

No wonder they win so often, who wouldn't be fired up after an anthem
    like that?

70000 fans at the Olympiastadion, sun shining, knockout round football,
classic red shirts vs blue shirts......this feels like a proper Euros
    match!

Well the Olympiastadion is not really an official "home" stadium, is it? (Though the DFB Pokal final is usually there nowadays I guess). Anyway
I don't think there is any particular advantage to the Germans of
playing in Berlin as opposed to, say, Munich, Hamburg, Dortmund,
    Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart or Köln.

Italy have been poor, which means they will win on penalties, almost
    certainly.

No, there is a limit to miracles. Italy conceded possession immediately
after the restart, no pressure whatsoever on the Swiss players, and
Vargas (in tons of space and time) curls in a beauty. 2-0

I think we'll be lucky if we avoid a 5-0 thrashing.

37 minutes, Switzerland cross from the left, Freuler receives and flicks
the ball up for himself to volley past Donnarumma to put Switzerland 1-0
    up!

Most of the pressure has been from Switzerland so far.

Right at the start of the second half Switzerland go 2-0 up with Vargas' beautifully placed shot from just in the area - it looped and evaded Donnarumma.

Come on Italia, stand and fight!

    Switzerland 2 - Italy 0

Italy didn’t have a clue as to how to pose a threat in this match. Switzerland looked comfortable and in control from the start.

Italy join the club of nations who’ve made completely underwhelming
    European Championship title defences.

Some huffing and puffing by Italy in the remainder of the second half,
never really seriously bothered the Swiss, who were happy to sit back
and defend a comfortable and fully deserved 2-0 (really, it should have
    been more).

Football kinda sucks, but the Italian NT sucks a lot more.

34 minutes, ref stops the match due to a thunderstorm.

I said it before but it’s worth repeating- this is why North and Central European countries should not be allowed to host major tournaments.
Modern stadia and good infrastructure aren’t the be all and end all.

47 minutes, Andersen gets the ball in the net for Denmark after s goal
mouth scramble, but it’s ruled out on VAR as he was offside earlier in
the play but while not interfering with play. Not sure about that
    decision myself.

51 minutes- ball hits the same Andersen’s hand in his own penalty area,
point blank range, my view is his body position is not unnatural
relative to the situation...so of course VAR award a penalty, which
Havertz converts to put Germany 1-0 up.

Poor Andersen. VAR has robbed him of being the hero and made him the
villain in the space of a few minutes.

So Andersen scored the offside goal, committed
the handball penalty and was out of position for
    the Musiala goal.
    Talk about a rotten day.

The VAR decisions completely spoiled this match. Feels like Denmark had
a decent goal ruled out and then Germany were basically gifted one.

They've just been explaining the decision on ITV and apparently the goal
was ruled out because the player who set Andersen up was fractionally
offisde - one of those "impossible to see with the naked eye but after replaying the position 50 times you can see the attacker's toenail is marginally ahead of the defender (with no meaningful advantage, which is
surely what offside is supposed to prevent?)" calls which are spoiling football.

You'd better get used to it. That's how it's going to be with the video
ref. There has to be a line, if you're a millimeter inside it's one
thing, if you're a millimeter outside it's another thing. Rules are
same at both ends. And the grey area is substantially reduced. When
there was no VAR an offside needed to be big enough so the refs could
be reasonably sure. And as we know very well, the grey area was way too
big and occasionally things happened like the Tevez offside. I
    definitely like it more now.

As I've said before, that's what is to be expected from Italy for a

much, the Euro is occasionally won by a minnow, as we know very well.

Reading between the lines- it looks like UEFA are following FIFA’s
position on kit colours, favouring players wearing all the same colour -
this was reported in the media during Qatar 2022 I think? I understand
it’s better for people who are colour blind.

Look at England today, for example - traditionally England have white
shirts and navy shorts but as said shorts would clash with the blue worn
by Slovakia England have turned out in Real Madrid style all white. So
far that’s where the comparisants with Real Madrid end!
