• Euro 2024 Second Round MD 3: FRA - BEL, POR - SVN [R]

From Real_Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 30 21:28:43 2024
Not sure what to make of Belgium, they look under par one match, then
like they mean business the next, very inconsistent. But then a France
side who can't beat Netherlands or an already eliminated Poland surely
    aren't very reliable either.

Whatever happens, please no more controversial VAR decisions or issues
over too much / too little injury time, let's have good clean matches
and may the best teams win!

On the one hand, Belgium is still set up to be largely a
counter-attacking team, so might actually do better against France. On
the other hand, they have done poorly against the French in recent
history - and maybe even not so recent. Don't think they have beaten
them in a competitive match since qualifying group for WC 1982, though I
    could be wrong.

Is it just me, or have Belgium been the more dangerous team in the first
30 minutes? (Paraphrasing MH, this means that now France will score and
    shut down shop)

Mostly France on the front foot, without creating much. In fact, it was
Lukaku and De Bruyne who tested Maignan. And then, in the 84th minute, a
mishit shot by Kolo Muani that was going nowhere finds Vertonghen's
thigh and loops over Casteels. 1-0 France. Just heard that it was given
    as a Vertonghen own goal.

So France on its way to the QFs having scored a grand total of three
goals: two own goals and a penalty. Shrug.

And still Belgium can’t beat France.

    Not a great game this.

84 minutes - Dembele’s shot deflects in off Vertonghen for an
unfortunate own goal to put France 1-0 up.

Just when I thought we might he headed for extra time and penalties :(

So far probably not a match they’ll be selling on dvd.

We’re going into extra time...................but might we get our first penalty shootout of this Euros?

    Portugal 0 - Slovenia 0 AET

    We’re going to penalties!

Slovenia could have won this in ET but missed a one on one.

Commentators praising an “incredible defensive performance” from
    Slovenia.

If you were the Portugal manager would you let Ronaldo take a penalty
given his emotional reaction to his earlier miss...?

13 minutes into extra time, soft penalty awarded to Portugal when the
attacker basically just runs into the Slovenian defender and falls over.

    Ronaldo takes the penalty...........Oblak saves!

Ronaldo breaks down in tears during half time of extra time!

    What drama!

    Costa saves from Vrbic!

Bernardo Silva scores to win the shootout 3-0 for Portugal!

The commentators bigged up Oblak as the keeper who would make the
difference in the shootout but they overlooked Mr ‘hat trick of saves” Costa!

Diogo Costa saved three penalties in the group stage of the 22/23
Champions League. But his overall record (10 saves out of 39 total
regular time penalties) is good, but not stratospheric

Slovenia defended reasonably well, but looked rather toothless in
attack. They never looked likely to score. Portugal never looked very
likely to score either. They looked more likely than Slovenia to score
and had more possession though so I think Portugal deserved to win.

It wasn't a very good match.
