• Women's Olympics Football tournament 2024 USA v Zambia (R)

From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 25 13:59:20 2024
Zambia started the 2020 Olympics with a 10-3 defeat against the
Netherlands, and followed it up with a 4-4 draw against China. USA are
the most successful team in the history of Women's football, the
Champions of North America, and 1 of the favourites to win the Olympics
this year. This one should be fun.

Let's make this the thread for all the Women's Olympic tournament:

    Group A
    France - Colombia 3-2
    Canada - New Zealand 2-1

The spying worked for the Canadians, but the scandal was enough to get
the coach sent home in disgrace.

    Group B
    Germany - Australia 3-0
    USA - Zambia 3-0

Easy win for the Yanks, good result for Germany.

    Group C
    Spain - Japan 2-1
    Nigeria - Brazil 0-1

Spain and Japan should be the best two teams in this group

They seem to have done this for years.

I demand a replay of the 2001 game beween Sweden and Canada. OR if not possible, that Canada's PS win is forfeit and Sweden gets the gold medal.

Lengthy suspensions for the parties involved, and 6 point penalty to the Canadian team, to be applied immediately in these Games.

Canadians now up to zero points and third place in their group. A win
vs. Colombia would make them second (assuming France gets at least a
draw vs. NZ). But being Canada they will probably lose or draw and that
will be the end of it.

Eventful day in the women's tournament: Canada getting the win in
stoppage time; Japan turning a 1-0 deficit to Brazil into a 2-1 win with
*two* stoppage time goals, and of course the craziest one of all: Zambia-Australia 5-6: Australia was 5-2 down in the 55th minute, but
turned it around with four goals, including the winner in the 90th
minute (goalkeepers on both sides not exactly faultless for several of
    the goals).

Barbra Banda (who is "cooking" in the NWSL, as the kids say) has now
three Olympic games hattricks, but has not won any of the matches in
which she achieved that feat. Surely some record?

And oh, the USA destroyed Germany 4-1.
(Spain-Nigeria 1-0 and Colombia- New Zealand 2-0 complete the picture)

Do not use Eurosport 2 to watch football. I tried to watch this match
online, and I'm pretty sure the TV channel was called Eurosport 2. They
didn't show the first 3 minutes of the first half; they didn't show the
first 3 minutes of the 2nd half, so I missed Germany's 2nd goal; and
they didn't show the last 5 minutes or so of the 2nd half, so I missed Germany's 4th goal! It was shocking! Absolutely appalling!

USA first, Germany second, Australia 3rd on 3 points and -3 GD.

    Group C:

This one's hard to predict. It'll probably be a draw. I'll go for a
Canada win, probably after extra time and possibly penalties.

50% success rate with those predictions. Not bad. Not particularly good
    though.

Brazil were playing in the wrong colour shorts against Spain.

What changed for Spain and/or Brazil? Why did Spain win earlier in the tournament and yet Brazil won yesterday?
