    What to do
    -----------

Look at the fixtures below: do you play home or away?

    *Home*
    - Before Thursday (= before 2024/9/11, 23:59 GMT)
=- Pick one team from each of the two matches

    *Away*
=- After Wednesday (or even sooner, if the home player has picked their
teams) and before kickoff of the first match on Saturday 2024/9/14
    - Pick one of the teams not picked by your opponent (if they haven't
picked any team, you have free choice; if she is Lassie and there is a
    tie, disregard the last vote)
=- their opponents will represent your opponent

*ATTENTION: NEW RULE*: If the away player doesn't pick any team before
his/her deadline, the home player will be represented by the team that
achieves the best outcome out of his/her two picked teams. If the home player doesn't pick any team before his deadline, the away player can
pick two teams (one from each match), and he/she will be represented by

Como is a beautiful place though, so an easy pick
(plus there’s also Matthias Braunöder and his Ralph
    Wiggum haircut).

From the honestly delightful book ‘Giuletta è ‘na
zoccola’ I have at home that collected the best striscioni of the 80‘s and 90‘s I remember one from
their Varesotto neighbours that said ‘voi comaschi
noi co le femmine’, but there‘s no problem with that
    either is there.

    Ciao,

Clever play to pick after the deadline. Now the opponent have to wrestle
with either ignoring it or sticking to the rules in this crusial, season defining match. And if you do stick to the rules, how humiliating will
it be to then lose, despite having to match to get the result in.
Perhaps it's best to not pick at all, and just leave it to random?

But random also involves the game master, so...

Interesting! I don't think we have ever had such a case. But I would say
that if the home player picks only one team, it counts as an incomplete
pick. This means that the away player gets to pick whichever team he
likes best out of the unpicked matchup, and his score will be the best
outcome of his two picks. Example:

    - You (home player) pick only Arsenal
    - Jesus (away player) picks Tottenham (forced) and Roma (free pick)
    - Results: TOT-ARS 0-1, GEN-ROM 1-1. Jesus gets his best outcome out of
his two picks, i.e., Roma. The selected matchup is Genoa-Roma, and you
both go home with one point.

Ah, and what if the away player also picks only one match? In that case
you both get a 10 point deduction for annoying the gamemaster.

Yes, top two get promoted from Tier 3, but only one team gets promoted
from Tier 2, and only one team gets relegated from Tiers 1 and 2, so
that next season we will have a 3-4-3 lineup (barring additional players joining UPT). Thanks for the reminder.

So the 'home' pick is two teams, but it's the 'away' pick [of
one team] that decides what match that will count? So basically,
    'away' gets the advantage! ;-)

And there was me thinking Arsenal [predictably] winning
    yesterday was a good result.

Hmmm, it's interesting though... I will have to remember that
the next time I am the 'away' pick.

    Genoa & Arsenal

Apologies, I had in-laws from Belgium visiting, and we were travelling
and in a different time zone. I read too quickly that entries were due
before Thursday, and put mine in while it was still Weds where I was.

Incidentally, given that most picked matches seem to be Sunday ones, why
is the entry time so (Weds lunch time for me) most weeks ?

Sorry, but the message explicitly says that the deadline is Wednesday,
23:59 GMT. I will have to be inflexible on this one (blame milivella)

You want to enjoy the beautiful views of the Canadian Rockies? Pay the
price with an early UPT deadline! (blame milivella here too) (Also, a
lot of the matches are Saturday ones)

Well, not exactly, because the home player gets to choose first, so they constrain the choices of the away player.

Now that you understand the rules, what's to stop you from winning the
    next 10 seasons of UPT?

I know, I saw that after. Reading in haste I just saw before Thursday.
I am not asking for special treatment or anything.

It was all easier when I had a more regular schedule. Serves me right
for retiring, and making it a half baked retirement where I still work
most days on top of that.

Being in Tier 3. Blueshirt FC could win promotion 2 years in a row and
then win the League 8 years in a row; they couldn't win it all 10 years
    though. :-)

Blueshirt FC have as much chance of wining anything as Chelsea
    FC have...

Hmmm... doesn't seem much of a home advantage to me, as the
'away' pick dictates the match that actually counts. But I've
remembered that for this week's pick, so we'll see how we go
from here now there's some added nuance involved.

Not really understanding them properly but winging it
    week-by-week, probably ;-)
