• What happens when a team is reduced to 7 players?

From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Sat Sep 28 20:10:47 2024
Where's the rules of the game on FIFA's web-site? I can't find them now.

I seem to remember reading that if a team's reduced to less than 8
players, the match gets abandoned or something. Well what happens then?
Does the result stand? Does the team that's left with less than 8
players just forfeit the game? There's got to be scenarios where either
    of those outcomes aren't fair.

Not sure this covered in the laws. It is either a win for the other
team or up to the specific rules of the competition the game is being
    played under.

Why do they have that rule anyway? Why not just let the team with less
than 7 players play on and try to win? After all, a lot of fans that
have paid lots of money to watch the match, are going to be unhappy
    about the match ending early.

In these days of five subs, I don't think it likely that a team is going
to go down to 6 men because of injuries.

Sendings off is another issues, though, and I suppose part of the reason
for the rule in the old days was to prevent violent play that would
injure players who could not be replaced.

One thing I never got was why a player (especially eg. a GK) could not
be subbed back in, in the event of a serious injury to his replacement.
This is allowed in rugby, for instance. Always assuming the maximum
number of subs has not been used up yet.

We discussed this not too long ago:

Agreed! That should be allowed. Everyone on the bench should be eligable -
even players who already were subbed out.

For the same reasons they have all other rules.

Why not just let the team with less than 7 players play on and try to win?

Not sure if anyone here has ever refereed a competitive game where the
score reaches a large goal difference, which is very likely to happen in
    a 11 players vs 7 players match.

At that point a couple of things can happen, the losing team gets pretty
upset and starts being overly physical (had to abandon a U13 game
because of this), or the winning team starts passing the ball around,
doesn't try to score any more goals, and, you guessed it, the losing
team gets pretty upset, rinse repeat.

Better stop the game, believe me.

What if a team's reduced to 6 players when they're 3-1 up with only 5
    minutes left though?

Would giving the 6 player team the choice of whether to continue or not
be practical? They could choose whether to resign, like you can in
    chess.
