If I'm reading things correctly (first tie-breaker is number of wins,
second is GD), Criciuma is relegated today mathematically if Fluminense
wins, and almost surely if Fluminense draws.

Atletico Mineiro is safe from relegation, but can still fight for a Sudamericana spot.

Athletico PR is safe with a draw against Bragantino today. They can
still fight for a Sudamericana spot.

Bragantino pretty much needs to win both its matches to stay up (and
that too may not be enough), unless Fluminense loses to Cuiaba.

I probably have missed some scenarios. In any case, we will have more
clarity after tonight's matches.

I think Belgium does too don't they? (Or maybe did. My information might
be out of date.)

Wins are already overvalued with 3 points for a win. This tiebreaker
makes a win actually worth slightly more than 3 points in effect, so I
think goal difference would be better myself.

On the other hand, with the 3 points for a win system (ludicrous as that
is), having the most wins also means having the most losses. Is a team
with 19 wins and 19 losses (and a GD of -10) really better than a team
with 13 wins, 18 draws, and 7 losses, and a GD of + 8 ?

With 2 points for a win, I would be more sympathetic to using number of
wins to break ties.


Number of wins (or regulation wins, or regulation and overtime wins)
have been used in the NHL, some Rugby leagues, MLS ? and some other
sports I think.
