• UEFA Nationsliga & WC 25

From Binder Dundat@21:1/5 to All on Mon Mar 17 15:43:47 2025
It seems like a long time since we have had Nationsliga games? These
club football breaks get longer and longer. AS was the case before, we
still really have no idea how it works and what you get if you win and
how you can qualify for World Cups and Euros and such.

The latest theory is that the top 8 teams will automatically qualify for
the World Cup, but we have no confirmation of this theory.

What we do know is that the 8 top teams from Group A will play home and
away Quarter Final matches and then the 4 winners play in either Italy
or Germany to decide the champion. Ther are also promotion and de
motion matches going on, but we have no idea how that works. To go
along with all of this, there are also WC qualifying matches going on as
    well.

    UEFA kicks off on Thursday

WE think that the following matches are for promotion to the A group,
    but no one really knows.
    17:00 GMT
    Armenia
    Georgia

    17:00 GMT
    Turkey
    Hungary

    19:45 GMT
    Austria
    Serbia

    19:45 GMT
    Bulgaria
    Rep of Ireland

These two matches are the A group QFs
    19:45 GMT
    Croatia
    France

    19:45 GMT
    Denmark
    Portugal

These matches may be to see who gets demoted to the B group?
    19:45 GMT
    Greece
    Scotland

This is also an A group QF
    19:45 GMT
    Italy
    Germany

Probably B or C group Promotion matches?
    19:45 GMT
    Kosovo
    Iceland

This is an A group QF, we are almost sure of that.
    19:45 GMT
    Netherlands
    Spain

    Probably Promotion matches.
    19:45 GMT
    Slovakia
    Slovenia

    19:45 GMT
    Ukraine
    Belgium

CONCACAF also has Nationsliga on Thursday. From what we gather this is
    the Semi finals?
    USA v Panama
WE assume this is Nationsliga and not a match to decide ownership of the
    Panama Canal?

    Canada v Mexico
I was hoping this would be played In Winnipeg or Edmonton, but no this
is taking place in California, so it is a home game for Mexico. This is
a match between the greatest teams in CONCACAF and the greatest friends
and trading partners. the loser has to invite Trump to their house for
dinner and somehow find American cheese to feed him. American cheese is essentially plastic for those who have not tried it. It really is.

Then on Friday, you have qualifying for WC 26. I think all the
federations have games? I will only talk about UEFA.

It seems like only the little countries are playing. England is now a
    minnow?

    17:00 GMT
    Cyprus
    San Marino

    19:45 GMT
    Andorra
    Latvia

    19:45 GMT
    England
    Albania

    19:45 GMT
    Malta
    Finland

    19:45 GMT
    Poland
    Lithuania

    19:45 GMT
    Romania
    Bosnia-Herzegovina

    World Cup 2026 qualifying
    Saturday 22 March 2025
    14:00 GMT
    Liechtenstein
    North Macedonia

    17:00 GMT
    Moldova
    Norway

    17:00 GMT
    Montenegro
    Gibraltar

    19:45 GMT
    Czech Republic
    Faroe Islands

    19:45 GMT
    Israel
    Estonia

    19:45 GMT

That theory would actually make sense and give people a reason to watch
    the Nations League.

As it happens, the part that's relevant to World Cup qualification was
already decided when the group stage ended.

    From Wikipedia:

"The best four Nations League group winners that finish outside the top
two of their World Cup qualifying group will join the twelve group
runners-up in the World Cup qualification second round (play-offs). If
fewer than four Nations League group winners can be selected, the
remaining spot(s) will be allocated to the best remaining team(s) in the Nations League interim overall ranking that finished outside the top two
    of their qualifying group"

    The ranking of winners is:

    1.Spain
    2.Germany
    3.Portugal
    4.France
    5. England
    6. Norway
    7. Wales
    8. Czech Republic
    9. Romania
    10.Sweden
    11. North Macedonia
    12. Northern Ireland
    13. Moldova
    14. San Marino

So basically the World Cup stuff is now as settled as it can be until
the World Cup qualifers take place and we're now back to watching a
    bunch of glorified friendlies.

Well, the quarterfinal results will also help define UEFA WCQ groups A,
    C, D, E, F, G, I and L, so there's that too.

    Spain vs Netherlands

Winner plays in Group E, with Turkey, Georgia and Bulgaria. Loser goes
to Group G, with Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Malta.

For a bit of trivia, Spain is the only remaining team in the world that
never lost a home WCQ game. Their streak is now on 61 games, three short
of Brasil's run of 64 (which fell to Argentina last year). So, depending
on where they go from this tie, they can either match or surpass the
record on this cycle already. Turkey could do something really funny
then, if they get in your group :-)

    France vs Croatia

Winner goes into Group D, with Ukraine, Iceland and Azerbaijan, while
Loser plays Group L, with Czech Republic, Montenegro, Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

    Portugal vs Denmark

Winner plays in Group F, with Hungary, Republic of Ireland and Armenia,
while Loser goes into Group C, with Greece, Scotland and Belarus.

    Germany vs Italy

Winner goes to Group A and faces Slovakia, Northern Ireland and
Luxembourg. Loser goes to Group I and plays Norway, Israel, Estonia and Moldova.

But regardless of that, I think that on their own this seems to be a
strong set of knockout games. Germany vs Italy is always a big one, and
the other three games look interesting as well. IMHO this wouldn't look
out of place in, say, an Euro's quarterfinal round.

    Best regards,

It looks like a lot of today's Nations League matches are being streamed
for free on the Viaplay International Youtube Channel and Scotland -
Greece is being broadcast here on the BBC, so I should be able to watch
    some of the action.

As Binder has previously alluded to, no one seems to be quite sure what
these Nations League teams are actually playing for, but the current
working theory is that they're all playing for a spot in this summer's Intertoto Cup. We'll get one of the team to fact check that.

In the meantime, the fixtures are:

    2pm GMT:

Georgia - Armenia (Georgia lead 3-0 on aggregate)

    5pm GMT:

Slovenia - Slovakia (0-0 on aggregate)

Iceland - Kosovo (Kosovo lead 2-1 on aggregate)

Ireland - Bulgaria (Ireland lead 2-1 on aggregate)

Serbia - Austria (1-1 on aggregate)

Scotland - Greece (Scotland lead 1-0 on aggregate)

Hungary - Turkey (Turkey lead 3-1 on aggregate)

    7.45PM GMT:

Belgium - Ukraine (Ukraine lead 3-1 on aggregate)

Germany - Italy (Germany lead 2-1 on aggregate)

Portugal - Denmark (Denmark lead 1-0 on aggregate)

Spain - Netherlands (2-2 on aggregate)

France - Croatia (Croatia lead 2-0 on aggregate)

Iceland - Kosovo (Kosovo lead 2-1 on aggregate)

Ireland - Bulgaria (Ireland lead 2-1 on aggregate)

Serbia - Austria (1-1 on aggregate)

This should be the match to watch, long rivalry between these two teams,
goes back to when the Kaiser was back up keeper for Austria.

Scotland - Greece (Scotland lead 1-0 on aggregate)

Hungary - Turkey (Turkey lead 3-1 on aggregate)

Spain - Netherlands (2-2 on aggregate)

France - Croatia (Croatia lead 2-0 on aggregate)

The four A matches are still wide open in my opinion, The Old Croatians
cant play twice in 3 days.
