• Friendly Canada - Ukraine [R]

From MH@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 7 14:54:07 2025
This is part of something called the Canadian Shield (I suppose the
name is in line with the concept that CONCACAF rocks ?), but basically a friendly, and a chance for US to put some lesser lights through their
paces prior to narrowing the 60 player list for the gold cup down to 23.

So some players like Bombito (Nice) Davies (Bayern) and Johnston
(Celtic) not even in the squad for these two matches (next one is vs.
Cote D'Ivoire - New Zealand is also involved but we don't play them),
and Marsch has left Larin, Koné, Laryea and Adekugbe on the bench for
the start here, giving Bassong, De Fougerolles, Sigur, and Saliba some
game time, along with Promise David up front alongside his namesake.

52 minutes in it is 3-0 Canada with 2 goals by J. David, and one by
Promise David (who has been replaced by neo-Canadian Jebbison for the
second half. Would not surprise me to see Jayden Nelson, Ali Ahmed, and
    Jamie Knight-Lebel come on later.

64th minute subs: Laryea for Sigur, Nelson for Shaffelburg,
Knight-Lebel for Cornelius. (I predict the next one will be Ahmed for Buchanan or Oluwaseyi for J. David).

Lebel for Cornelius.   (I predict the next one will be Ahmed for

Final was 4-2. It was 4-0 at 88 minutes, but Ukraine scored a rebound
and a penalty (for the type of handball I still hate to see given).
Based on the highlights there were lots of scoring chances both ways,
and Buchanan is in top form, which can't be bad news. Presumably the
defence will be beefed up with Bombito and Johnston for the Gold Cup,
    unless they are injured.

No Bombito or Davies for the Gold Cup. Johnston is on the list. It is
not all that clear who will start, as Marsch has been mixing things up a
fair bit. Assuming everyone is health, it might be something like:

GK. St. Clair (though Crepeau is maybe equally likely and made many
    good saves vs. Ukraine)

DF: Johnston, Cornelius, [De FOugerolles or Knight Lebel or another]
    Laryea (Adekugbe)

MF: Eustquio, Koné, Osorio or Choiniere

    FW: Buchanan, Shaffelburg, J. David.

Today's friendly may reveal more of what Marsch is thinking. A fair
number of attacking options, and Saliba is pretty good in midfield too,
but the centre back options are uninspiring.

Jesse would want to liven up his attacking options after the boring 0-0
against Côte d'Ivoire, with a loss on penalties.

Yes, seems like he wanted to get as many players as possible involved.
Did not start David or Eustaquio or Shaffelburg or Buchanan, and there
were changes elsewhere on the pitch. Probably not a bad idea since a
lot of the squad had no to very few caps before these two games.
