• CONCACAF Gold Cup R

From Binder Dundat@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 15 14:07:47 2025
May as well do a different thread for every cup.

The Rockingest Cup started with a 3-2 win for Mexico over Dominican
Republic, the baseball powerhouse of CONCACAF. It is true, that guy who
gets paid a 100 million dollars a year, I think is from Dominican?
Though most people know Dominican for being the place where Falco died.

The Rockingness of Concacaf, is that no one knows who will win or quaify
and if they even come from the CONCACAF

Yeah Saudi Arabia aren't even from North America. If it's such a rocking confederation, why are Saudi Arabia playing in it instead of Bonaire or
    Belize or whoever?

Same could be said of CONMEBOL who have frequently invited CONCACAF

did better than most of the CONMEBOL sides).

In the final day of group matches at the Golden Cup it is all very
complicated. WEll, not really. USA,Mexico, Costa Rica and newly
promoted Concacafians Saudia Arabia are through.

Kanada needs a draw, or even a loss depending on what happens, a win
would guaranty 1st place though. Everyone is still involved in the last
day, but it will probably be Honduras and Kanada?

Likewise in the other group anything is possible. Panama are through,
but even Guadeloupe could qualify. Which once again proves the
    Rockingness of CONCACAF.

    Guadeloupe 0 - 2 Guatemala

    As it stands
    1.Panama

And we are declaring Panama and Guatemala advance.

It would take Jamaica winning and Guatemala losing for things to change.

For whatever reason TSN is only broadcasting the Pnaman v jamaica game
now and then only the Kanada game later, even though they are showing

Pretty horrible game. Canada lacking in ideas and any fluidity, El
Salvador intent on parking the bus and being physical from the get go,
and after the red cards, just defending deep. Red cards pretty much
deserved, and there could have been one or two more (double yellows).
    J. David missed a penalty. Fortunately there were a couple of times
when a good pass or cross or dribble led to a scoring chance, and two of
those were nicely converted by J. David and Buchanan.

So far Canada has looked pretty disappointing when playing outside of
Canada. Missing Davies, Bombito, Eustaquio, Osorio, Adekukbe, and now
Ali Ahmed has not helped, as well as having Laryea and Johnston just
returning from injury or other issues.

Some of the newer guys (Promise David, Jebbison) have not looked very comfortable. On the other hand, Choiniere, Sigur, De Fougerolles, and
Saliba have done enough to merit regular inclusion in future squads, if
    not in starting lineups.

Would be very very surprised if we get past the semifinals the way we
are playing, and would guess Mexico or Panama will win the whole thing.

Two disappointing results yesterday for sure. I really wanted Costa
Rica to go through, as well as Canada.

Canada did not really deserve to progress. They were clearly the better
side in the first half, but after Shaffelburg's sending off, Guatemala
(who looked a decent side when they had the ball, and were much more enterprising that El Salvador in the last game) dominated. The second
yellow for Shaffelburg was completely justified, though one could argue (tenuously) that the first one was harsh. Very stupid for the second
one for sure. All three penalties awarded during regular play
yesterday were pretty soft to non-existent.

Under Marsch, Canada seems to get hot under the collar far too easily,
and I wonder if he is in part responsible for that, as he himself whines
too much and is always yacking at referees and opposition players.

Anyway, pretty disappointing tournament for Canada, with only one good performance (and that, not coincidentally, in Vancouver). Only thing
that can be taken from this is that Saliba, Sigur and De Fougerollles
should probably make the team for the world cup if they keep playing and
stay healthy. On the other hand, none of Latin, Jebbison, Olowaseyi or
Promise David really earned a spot with their performances, leaving room
for players like Bair, Russell-Rowe, Kerr, and others to earn a place if
    they have good seasons.

Bombito, Eustaquio, Davies, Osorio were missed at critical times. Koné
seems to have regressed a bit.

Back in my day Costa Rica was the better team.

When was that? I don't remember Costa Rica being better than the USA

    1990 ?   2014 ?

    Panama will beat Honduras
    Mexico will beat Saudi Arabia
    Canada will beat Guatemala
    USA will beat Costa Rica

2 out of 4. OK, but not particularly good.

I was thinking Canada might even win this thing, but they are not even
in the final. USA v Mexico tonight to decide winner of the Golden Cup.

In CONCACAF related news, I think Jonathan Davids new team is Jj? He
would have got more airplay and money had he joined a WWEpl club, but he probably has a better chance at winning stuff and maybe learning some
    things playing for Jj.

And Mexico won convincingly (though only 2-1). Most of the possession,
way more shots, more shots on target and 12-0 corners.

Perhaps Mexico has an outside shot at a World Cup win next summer, with
some of the games at home, and strong support for games player in the US
and even Canada. Not sure, in spite of the solid team they have, that
they have enough players who can make a difference, though young Mora
    looks like a great talent.

As for Canada, disappointing, only played really well for one game. And stupidity on the red card cost them dearly. The US is still a work in
progress and I am actually surprised they got as far as they did without
so many of their European based players including Pulisic and McKennie.
I don't think Pochettino has really improved the team in any important way.

In CONCACAF related news, I think Jonathan Davids new team is Jj?

I was hoping he would stay at Lille or go to the Bundesliga. Maybe
    somewhere like Leverkusen or Leipzig.
