Personally, I'm surprised you prefer the inconvenience of
using a web site rather than a newsreader to access Usenet.
I think a newsreader is way easier... always open, always
    logged in.

The fact that the administrator of NovaBBS has died probably
means any issues or bugs won't get fixed unless somebody
else takes over the running of it.

I can't see the whole thread all in 1 go on a newsreader!

    Yes you can.

[Tools -> Options-> Default settings -> Sorting and threading ->
Then choose the threaded display option.]

You can also drag the message content window down to give the
message-tree pane more space to view longer threads.

Fiddle around more with your newsreader's options rather than
taking the easy way out and expecting everything to do what you
want it to do like magic. XanaNews has plenty of configuration
options. You are the user, get it to work the way you want it
    to.

I've also discovered another problem with novaBBS.

NovaBBS was always a work in progress. It never was the
    ideal way to access Usenet...

I've also discovered another problem with novaBBS. It's not once a day
I have to type in my password; I think it's once per hour! When I've
spent an unusually long time on rss, I've sometimes had to type my
    password more than once.

    It doesn't work.
