PARIS — Simone Biles battled through a calf injury during the first day of Olympic women’s gymnastics competition, but her coach doesn’t expect it to keep Biles from competing in the rest of the Olympics.
In Sunday’s qualifying round, Biles appeared to hurt her left calf while warming up floor exercise prior to the second rotation. She momentarily left the arena but returned and completed the rest of the competition with her
leg taped. Biles finished with a 59.566, the top all-around score of the session.
Cecile Landi, the United States head coach and Biles' personal coach, said
the injury was a flare-up of an ailment that had bothered Biles before.
“She felt a little something in her calf,” Landi said. “It was a couple weeks ago, she felt it. But after that it stopped, and just a little bit
again today.”
Landi and U.S. women’s gymnastics technical lead Chellsie Memmel both declined to describe Biles' injury more specifically, saying they had not
yet spoken with team physician Dr. Marcia Faustin.
