Just to be clear, there is no plan to eliminate
student debt.
There is a plan to transfer that debt to those
that don't owe it.

Student debt is what keeps many college towns afloat.

MikeIf your personal financial objective is to keep "college towns afloat"
then by all means, send them your money. I paid off my own student loans, don't give a crap about keeping college towns afloat and do not want
to spend my hard-earned money paying off some one else's student
loans.
And, BTW, America's major Universities have more than $200 billion
in endowments.

right! And I don't want to pay for all of those weapons we make. Why should I put out good money for something I don't want?

you get my point, though. The govt. uses our money in ways that irritate us. There's no line item deduction for govt. spending that we don't like.
For reference, it's estimated this student loan debt reduction will cost an average taxpayer $200 a year. Whatever you paid in taxes
for 2021, 11% went to welfare, 13% to DOD, 21% to Social Security. If you pay $15,000 in taxes (just a random number, ymmv) $200
a year is a little over 1%. I think there are other items that we find much more questionable.
