• Golf lesson this AM

    We have a new pro at our club, and thought I would give him a try, with the golf season just around the corner.

    He brought a lot of high tech stuff with him, including Trackman and pressure plates. He really liked my setup and basic fundamentals, but he tore me apart with foot pressure. He said that I had virtually no weight shift to my right side on the
    backswing, which caused me to have a slight reverse pivot. He showed me the importance of transferring not only weight, but pressure onto my right side, and how to release that pressure on the downswing, and re-establish pressure on the left side. We
    worked on this for about 30 minutes.

    The result is a very much body oriented swing, vs arms oriented. I could feel my body working more than ever, realized how armsy and handsy I was. We then progressed from the short irons to driver, and I was amazed at how easy this all was. My
    driver speed was 92 mph with our baseline readings, and went as high as 98 mph better utilizing these ground forces.

    He gave me a few drills to do at home, without hitting a ball, to reinforce the feel of these ground forces. A new sensation for me, I will say money and time well spent.

    If there is interest here, i can go into the instruction in more detail. But most of you progressive twits would rather talk politics, so I don't want to bother anyone. And being vaxed, a lot of you probably don't have the energy to even finish 18, or
    the mental capacity to process something like golf swing changes. . Happy to give more detail though, if interested. Really good stuff, if you are into upgrading your game. I will agree with our resident Spinster, golf lessons are important and
    worth the time.

    Weight shift is a vital part of the swing because that energy is transferred into club head speed, which you found out. If you doing it properly most of your weight ends up on your left foot and you are balancing with your right toe with your belt buckle
    pointing towards the target. The AMG website I sent you to covers this in detail (w/o the cost of lessons, but when you pay for it you are more apt to listen). The next step is to see how this translates to the golf course. As always, the first objective
    is to keep the ball on the fairway, so track the number of fairways hit (if you aren't already). The woods, as they say, are full of long-ball hitters.

    It is interesting to note that Jack Nicklaus had a slump and brought in a new coach who found that his stance was too upright (which isn't rocket science):

    Yes, where there is weight shift, you automatically get pressure changes. But, my instructor wanted the emphasis to be pressure,, and it is hard to explain, but easily understood and felt with the pressure pads. You can see color changes and intensity
    changes in those colors based on your pressure differentials, and you can also see how the pressure changes from foot to foot. For example, is it a lateral pressure change or diagonal. This instructor kept on using the term "ground forces" and I
    always reognized them to be there, as with any sport, but never really gave it all much thought. I think the most important thing out of that lesson was fixing a slight reverse pivot, and really getting my weight AND pressure to my front side, really
    getting those hips cleared. Ultimately, getting more power with less effort, and letting the body square the club, instead flipping with the hands. video showed a bit of throwaway motion. Another lesson in two weeks. Got my son signed up, all good
    stuff. Really like those pressure pads, they take an abstract concept like pressure and make it easy to see and translate to your golf swing pretty quick. Almost like biofeedback. Leaving this weekend for a five day golf trip with my wife and another
    couple. With all the Covid nonsense going away, good to start traveling again, things being wide open, and without all the worries of masks and all the other associated nonsense. Be great to have a few new swing thoughts to start what it is
    hopefully a great 2022 golf season.
