The country sounds as backward as Betty him/her/they self (which is it
this week).

A hybrid makes a lot more sense for such a trip although I am sure you
can find people who aren't doing it for a story who manage just fine.

I thought it would be fun.
The following week, I fill up my Jetta at a local Shell station. Gas
is up to $4.08 a gallon.
I inhale deeply. Fumes never smelled so sweet.

can find people who aren't doing it for a story who manage just fine.
the obvious: that EV tech & infrastructure just isn't good enough yet
to satisfy 99% of all possible use cases.
Fortunately, there's alternatives .. including more than just getting
a Hybrid or ICE, but also different transportation modes too:

And before Tommy whines about costs, lets note that the IRS
mileage rate ... which includes indirect expenses, not just fuel,
is currently 58.5 cents per mile, so the ~1000 mile New Orleans
to Chicago trip is going to run ~$580 ... which means that for two,
both flying or Amtrak is less expensive even before considering
the driving route's higher costs of meals & hotels while en route.
