• From the Professor Himalaya newsletter

From Irving S@21:1/5 to All on Wed Nov 2 12:53:43 2022
I did not realize that having lessons from this instructor meant I would be getting a free newsletter. Well, it showed up in my email this mornimg. A few snippets, I will share.

    1. The Prof says that hands should never go behind the head on the takeaway, until they get to the head. He says most golfers suck the club in too quick, they turn with their shoulders, their hips, and twist with their hands. That is too much turn.
Just trust the hands to do their job, they will get you there.

    2. The Prof says that the most important part of the club is the shaft. He says that you should forget about what the flex of a shaft is. Slow swingers can hit stiff, and fast swingers can hit regular. What matters is tempo and how you release the
club. He says that too many players try to adapt to a shaft, instead of finding a shaft that works for them.
The other thing the Prof stressed was consistent shafts in a set. For example a 50 gram driver, 110 gram irons, and 130 gram wedges. He says you need a consistent set, or your swing is all over the place.

    3. Do not obsess with swing plane and positions. The Prof believes that current instruction focuses so much on positions, our brains can only process so much. He says that you do not create positions, positions happen from the right motions. The
hands rule with his teachings, the body follows.

A really good newsletter, there was a lot more info, I just gave the tidbits.

I really agree about the shaft stuff. With my current set, I must have tried over 20 shafts in a fitting session that was over 2 hours. The difference between shafts is striking. My driver is 40 grams, yes very light. My irons , hybrids, and fairway
woods are 50 grams across the board. Two benefits to that. First, it allows a fairly consistent swing. Second, I walk most of the time and light clubs do make a difference over a rolling course, just over a 6 mile walk.

And I could care less about positions and swing plane. I just swing. I really focus on alignment and tempo. I incorporate all the things I have learned this year. I just swing, let the club go where it may. All this crap about positions and swing
plane is just too much to think about.

The Prof says he is winding down lessons this year, hanging out with some family on the West Coast, then to Hua Hin, where he will again spend his time at a local course teaching beginners and a few rising college stars. I would love to pay him a visit,
but will probably never happen. I have been to Thailand, what an amazing place. Bangkok gets a bad rap, I found it to be a wonderful place, beyond safe, wonderful people, and incredible food.

If you have specific questions about the golf swing, feel free to email the Prof at ProfHimalaya@Proton.me He told me a few of you have been in contact with him, and one of you will be seeing him for lessons. Incredible instruction, what a gem of a
    man!

Oh, and one tidbit I forgot to mention. The Prof had a two page spread about his feelings on eye dominance. He gave a test you could do to show which eye is dominant.

I learned I am cross dominant. He told us during our lesson, and he repeats it in his newsletter, you must keep your dominant eye on the ball. Especially with putting! Because if you switch eyes, the ball moves as does various lines associated with
the golf swing. No. not literally, but from a visual standpoint. It is interesting the impact understanding eye dominance can have with your game. It is worth experimenting with. I bet this is something the pros are very much aware of, and spend a
lot of time perfecting, specifically the optics of addressing the ball and swinging through the ball.

There is plenty of stuff out there about eye dominance and golf. Recommend researching it. Something we do not think about much, but having a very subtle impact on our games.

You are not entitled to the orignal you silly old doofus. This was something he is doing for his students, it is not meant for general disbursement.

You want the newsletter. Two options doofus. Take some lessons from the Prof, or contact him directly, maybe he will send you a copy. Not right for me to give out a newsletter that someone put some time in, without asking them first. That is called
common courtesy, you do undertand that concept doofus?

I bet he will now delay some of his responses just to prove to us he is not hovering. No matter, we know he is. Hey, if hovering is his thing, all the power to him. You and I got families, homes to maintain, a lot more important shit than hovering.
But hovering is certainly harmless, we should be glad that people have outlets like this to kill some time. Cannot imagine the boredom, after a few minutes it gets real boring. In fact, I am over my limit now, gotta run.
