Many people across Northern California on Friday reported seeing a bright light in the sky tumbling down. Several people captured the phenomenon on camera. Video taken from El Dorado County showed a bright ball descending from a dark night sky.
Is it a hoax or not?It seems highly unlikely to me that the meteorite was still hot enough

to start a fire when it hit the ground. If it was then it will be plenty
big enough for fire investigators to find it very easily. The value of a meteorite that big will also roughly pay for rebuilding the guy's house.
My money is on a gas fired central heating malfunction.
I suspect that if was big enough to start a fire it would also have
still had enough kinetic energy on ground impact to level the house and
we would be looking at an impact crater rather than a burnt out house.
The largest ones found in the UK recently have sold for decent sums of
money and some pieces were around a foot across and still warm when they landed. But nothing like hot enough to start a fire.

Christies has an annual auction of meteorites and related memorabilia
where people pay silly money for rare items.
