• DST and America

There are two main issues involved are by latitude as one issue and Longitude as the other. There are many others, but these represent the most contention among individuals presently.

You don't need to travel to a different time zone; the Sun comes into view one hour later on the extreme West side of a time zone compared to the extreme Eastern side. The Earth turns at a rate of 4 minutes for each degree of rotation, so as a time zone
is 15 degrees of longitude, representing one hour; it follows that nobody has to cross timezones to experience what they can within their own. This covers the longitude issue.

Latitude differences are more complicated as the Southern States, with their latitudes parallel to those of Northern Africa, contrast with the Northern States, which are parallel with the latitudes of mid-Europe

It means that DST has little relevance at the latitude of Miami while it does at the latitude of Duluth, where the seasonal swings in daylight/darkness across the seasons are far more pronounced than that of the Southern city. It is no surprise that the
politician making the proposal comes from that latitude.

The complete absence of the academic community in this matter is understandable and more or less the reason for their almost complete absence from this newsgroup. So well and good.

For Ireland, where I live, DST is an excellent use of the timekeeping adjustment as the symmetry works for those winter months while the asymmetry of DST gives people a boost around the March Equinox and for some time afterwards.
