Mercury is currently changing from a morning to evening appearance as it travels behind the Sun from right to left.

The stars change position from left to right as a response to the Earth’s orbital motion and therefore change from an evening to morning appearance. In antiquity, this was the basis for our present 365/366-day calendar system as it relied on the first-
morning appearance of the star Sirius after it was lost to the glare of the Sun for a number of weeks-

“.. on account of the procession of the rising of Sirius by one day in the course of 4 years,.. therefore it shall be, that the year of 360 days and the 5 days added to their end, so one day shall be from this day after every 4 years added to the 5
epagomenae before the new year” Canopus Decree 238 BC

That can be explained, however, the important issue is that it differs from the more recent Ptolemaic system where the Sun travels through the constellations annual and gives us birth signs, the zodiac and so on.

Copernicus nor any of the first Sun-centred astronomers would have known about the ancient Decans system which gives us the calendar system and hence could have resolved both the faster motions of Venus and Mercury using that framework and ultimately
allowed the introduction of genuine climate science research as Copernicus was right about his third motion-

“The third movement is the declination movement. For the axis of daily rotation is not parallel to the axis of the great circle but is inclined to it by such a part of the circumference, which in our time is almost 23 and a half degrees. Thus the
centre of the Earth always remains in the plane of the ecliptic, i.e. on the circumference of a great circle, and its poles revolve, drawing small circles on both sides around the centres equidistant from the axis of the great circle. This movement, too,
takes place over a period of almost a year and is almost equal to the revolution of the great wheel” Copernicus, Commentariolus.
