Typical now of higher capacity premium photographic mounts. AP1600 is similar.

People put that kind of money (and often more) into cars and boats all
the time. It's just a matter of priorities. A project like this isn't
for someone who's poor. But you don't have to be rich, either. Not by
    a long shot.

Planty of idiots out there, think things makes them happy.
Lot of money for a set up like that, just to take pretty pictures of the deep sky?
    Greed is greed!
I just hate when people complaining about not having money, the price of food, too much bills they have etc...
But then they go out and spend money on expensive cars or clothing, because it's easy to spend on credit cards or take a home equity loan.
Lot of impulse buying going on, then the Chines crap ends up on eBay or Facebook, for sale.
I knew a guy, bought an RV for $140k, used it maybe 2-3 times year then few years later sold it, bc just sat there most of the time.
He could've just rent one when needed it?
Could've save money, time and headaches.

Happens all the time. Years ago, there was a person on this group who had money to burn. He bought into the hobby to the tune of around $100k, but it didn't continue because he was no amateur astronomer, just someone looking for a distraction, and when
instant gratification got old. he bailed.

If people acquire things outside their means they are economically
foolish. Of course, they are much more likely to do this with cars or
houses than they are with astronomical equipment!

If people take pleasure in material things that they can actually
afford, however, I fail to see any problem. I know quite a few
astronomical imagers with significant investments in equipment. People
who are very actively engaged in their hobby. And none of them appear
to have gone into debt or lost the ability to feed their children
    because of it.
