• The Commentariolus of Copernicus

    From kelleher.gerald@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Fri Nov 19 02:38:42 2021
    I came to understand the words of Copernicus in his preface to De Revolutionibus as to why he choose not to publish the Commentariolus and their re-discovery in the mid 19th century in Sweden, Russia and Austria-

    That small commentary is invaluable considering the issue of the Precession of the Equinoxes and the difficulties he had in using the Ptolemaic framework as the basis for a moving Earth in a Sun-centred system.

    I reluctantly accept (after the moon thread) that consideration and discussion is close to impossible in this newsgroup full of commercial observers, dirty old men and theoretical malcontents but continue I will.

    " ....not to be ridiculed by those who are reluctant to exert
    themselves vigorously in any literary pursuit unless it is lucrative;
    or if they are stimulated to the nonacquisitive study of philosophy by
    the exhortation and example of others, yet because of their dullness
    of mind they play the same part among scientists as drones among bees.
    When I weighed these considerations, the scorn which I had reason to
    fear on account of the novelty and unconventionality of my opinion
    almost induced me to abandon completely the work which I had
    undertaken." Copernicus
