Tennessine is element 117, created in a lab. The researchers involved
were from various institutions in Tennessee.
The naming process is under the auspices of the International Union of
Pure and Applied Chemistry. -ine is the appropriate suffix for elements
in group 17.
Three other new elements which were approved in 2016 were nihonium
(113), moscovium (115) and oganesson (118).
Crystal doesn't say why 27 January was chosen by the Tennesseans, or
what sort of festivity or ceremony was associated with the "inaugural
naming".
He does point out that, unlike the formation of many neologisms, this
one was subject to formal rules and very public.
