Anne, how would you feel if an atheist was President? If he/she decided
that praying wasn't really favorable to any part of the GOVERNMENT? If they said the oath will no longer include the bible (which I don't think it
should anyway) or that there will no longer be a national Christmas tree? Would you respect that as the ruler and top dog of our country they should have the option of making these changes?
How would you feel if the majority of the people in this country didn't believe in god but you still did?
And by majority, let's make it 51/49.
I guess I think Sheila is spot on and back her up with the thought process that the nuances of any ONE particular religion should not be included in
our governmental processes, be it inauguration, money, the pledge of allegiance, the national Christmas tree or what have you. When these laws
you speak of were laid down, the only real "immigrants" we had were the
white Puritans. Of course there were the laws of the Native AMERICANS but
the white Puritans quickly negated that these laws were applicable to them..... see America has been arrogant since inception ;-)

Sorry, but I think you could not be more wrong! We, the nation as a political entity, DO recognize a god whether law says we should or
should not acknowledge that tenet--it's rampant in our law, right down
to the oath people take in court when they testify. More evidence of
this is clearly printed on our money, cited previously by others.
What you are saying is that you believe the "intent" is to absolutely/clearly separate religion and patriotism and/or politics.
Fair enough statement, and I feel sure that is the intent. Intent is
not reality, however; reality is that the majority of this nation DOES believe in a god/God, and that belief has caused the public outrage
at this attempt to eliminate "under god." (It may be a bit arrogant
to assume God/god somehow "favors" a nation that acknowledges Him, but history is full of that, so...<GGG>)

I can see not having to say "under God" if a student is uncomfortable
with it. Nothing in the way of doctrine is being taught with the
phrase "under God", though--it's acknowledgement that we as a nation
recognize a god. Since children will be exposed to that all their
lives here in the USA, no biggie--I doubt very seriously if it's truly >> traumatic.
