    The Real Electric-Vehicle ‘Choice’
By The Editorial Board, Aug. 25, 2023, WSJ
Progressives know that banning gas-powered cars, like gas stoves, is unpopular, which is why they aren’t honest with voters about their plans. Consider how New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is selling his electric-vehicle mandate as increasing “choice.”

Earlier this year, Mr. Murphy announced his state would adopt California’s ban on the sale of new gas-engine cars by 2035. California’s rules require electric vehicles to make up a growing share of auto-maker sales. Manufacturers will be dunned if
they miss their benchmarks. More than a dozen states have adopted California’s mandate.

Auto makers will have no choice but to sell fewer gas-powered cars in New Jersey and other states that follow California’s mandate, as Stellantis explained in a letter to its dealers this spring. “In some circumstances, we may be compelled to
allocate more electrified powertrain vehicles to California states,” the memo explained.

But Mr. Murphy doesn’t want voters to know that EVs may soon displace gas-powered cars on dealer lots. “There’s a lot of misinformation about what this order does,” his climate director Catherine Klinger said in an interview with ROI-NJ that was
published this week. “It requires that new vehicle sales in the state are zero emission by 2035. More than 50% of vehicles that are sold in the state are used. And there is absolutely no change to the used vehicle market.”

If you like your Jeep Cherokee, you’ll still be able to buy a used one—at least until California also bans those. Ms. Klinger added that New Jersey car buyers will have other choices. “You could get a hybrid, you could get an EV, you could go to
another state that has not adopted [this regulation],” she said. “Choices abound.”

Travel to another state? Pennsylvania hasn’t adopted California’s mandate yet, so New Jerseyans might be able to buy gas-powered cars there. But then there will be fewer gas-powered cars for Pennsylvanians since the Biden Administration is limiting
internal-combustion engine sales nationwide. Thanks for nothing.

A Pew Research Center survey in June found that 59% of Americans oppose a 2035 ban on new gas cars and trucks, which was up from 51% in April 2021. Auto dealers report that EVs are piling up on lots. Some are refusing to accept more deliveries until they
sell their inventory. This is why Democrats are banning gas-powered cars.

Progressives always resort to government coercion when Americans don’t do what they want and call it a “choice.”
