Yep - we (and much of Europe) have 'sophisticated' ourselves
to the brink of oblivion. Our "worst problems" have nothing
    to do with Worst Problems.

I figure Xi gets the western half, Vlad gets the
eastern half - and Iran will have to get SOME
little bit too - hopefully some deep blue enclave
where there are lots of infidels to beat into
    submission - that'll make 'em happy :-)

ANYway ... the mil future can NOT resemble mil past.
That just doesn't work. Look into the VAST quantities
of lives spent by old Brit officers in WW-1 using
    19th-century troop/horse charges - on interlocking
German machinegun nests and howitzer batteries. TOOK
awhile for someone to realize that wasn't working.
By then we had the "lost generation".

I'm sure old US/UK officers WANT to hang on to the
old ways - vast squads of soldiers snapping to
attention everywhere they appear. SO grand, SO
    satisfying to the ego.

But that's not how it will be - CAN be. From
now on it's "terminator" warfare, tech-vs-tech
with fewer and fewer humans involved. Ukraine
may be the last of the old wars - still lots of
humans fighting each other - but we've seen the
toll that has taken. It's unsustainable. The
drones, cruise missiles and glide bombs now do
the bulk of tactical damage. Ukraine made this
especially clear, thwarting the Russian invasion
with cheap-ass drones, doing HUGE damage on their
armor, supplies and troops. This is the new pattern.

Mil ? How about "Team Land-War", "Team Ocean-War"
and "Team Air-War" ... basically a bunch of govt
employed game geeks. The uniform is a Hawaiian
shirt and a bag of Cheetos. They'll work out of
basements across the USA - average age 14.

The Merchant Marine is not part of the Navy. The sailors are not
military or even government. I had an uncle in the Merchant Marine
in the last war. The ships can be government or private.

The way to bolster the Merchant Marine is entice more young adults
to be commercial sailors on freighters and such. The usual way is
to make it a lucrative career. More money.

In the 1940s commercial and military sailors often did the same
things with Merchant Marine paid much more than Navy. On the other
hand Navy sailors got additional benefits and backing from the
    Department of the Navy. Merchant Marine were not sent into combat;
they only had to deal with hazards at sea; like torpedoes.
