‘Noem lacks qualifications’ for Homeland Security

Governor Kristi Noem’s past scandals make her unqualified to lead a
    federal department.

On Tuesday, news reports and sources close to the selection reported that
Noem had been tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to likely serve as
his Department of Homeland Security Secretary.

SD Democrats critiqued the choice, citing allegations that Noem used her position to get her daughter special treatment when acquiring a state
license and the nine tribes in South Dakota that banned Noem due to her
    remarks on reservations and cartels.

View the full statement from South Dakota Democrats below.

“Gov. Noem lacks the qualifications to lead Homeland Security. Her
years as South Dakota’s governor have proven that she is not equipped to
lead such a critical department that safeguards the security of the
American people,” said Chair Shane Merrill. “She has faced allegations of misusing her office to help her daughter which resulted in a settlement
that cost the state $200,000. Noem is currently banned from all nine
Tribal reservations due to her accusations about drug cartels on tribal
land and saying Native children ‘don’t have any hope’. She used taxpayer
money to send the National Guard to the US/Mexico border for publicity
stunts. Her administration has seen constant turnover and she has eroded government transparency. Our state government is also in the middle of corruption investigations involving former state employees. These
scandals show that Gov. Noem does not have what it takes to lead a
federal department. The American people deserve someone who is more
qualified and competent to head the Department of Homeland Security.”

Another group spoke out against Noem after the news broke on Tuesday.

The South Dakota Education Equity Coalition, which is an Native American
youth education group, released a statement that said the following part:

This choice not only disregards her failures as a state leader but
also sends a dangerous signal about the priorities of our federal
government. Governor Noem’s track record as South Dakota’s leader has
been marked by negligence toward Indigenous rights and education,
alarming inefficiencies in communication with Tribal Leaders, and
exclusion of Indigenous perspectives in state education planning. These shortcomings raise serious concerns about her ability to handle the
nuanced responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security,
especially regarding the Indigenous communities she will impact on a
    national scale.
