Review: The Gebusi
The Gebusi begins with an introduction which encompasses the overall theme of the book along with the evolving culture of the Gebusi people located in the rainforest of New Guinea. Immediately Knauft immerses the readership within their culture by
writing about the activities these people partake in, wife beating, sorcery acquisitions, eye popping costumes, and “that cannibalism had been common” (4). Some of those principles strongly opposing western culture it is easy to sink into a
perspective of Tylor deeming these people uncivilized due to their barbaric savageque nature, a nature many correlate with activities such as cannibalism. However, through the lens of the narrator, the readership gets both perspectives, can begin to see
these people for the beautiful culture they embody.
After the introduction, the narrator begins his ethnography with his first interaction with the Gebusi back in 1980, a small tribe having roughly 450 people. Immediately he was struck by food supply, “the bananas were piled, hot and grimy” (13)
Knauft seeming put off by what he was preparing to eat. As dinner was passed around on the “palm leaf platter” (13), he was served an ample amount of food, and ultimately decided to give up some of his dinner. The Gebusi were grateful, serving his
family too much food, testing their generosity. By gifting a portion of his dinner back, the Gebusi knew they could be trusted. This almost resembles an Assabiya like test, a concept Ibn Khaldun uses to summarize the relationship between people of a
small village or tribe, particularly the love and mutual respect these people all share for one another.
Despite the immediate love Knauft feels from these people he notes the two radically separate perspectives one can have regarding the Gebusi. Ultimately these perspectives resemble a more Tylor like perspective versus a Boas like perspective. On one hand,
people could view the Gebusi for the morally slippery practices, men as the dominant figures and sexual abuse versus the side which shows immense love and support for the new comers.
Flowing into Chapter 2 Knauft writes on the kill these people have acquired, specifically in the realm of survival. “How quickly they could climb a tree, club a lizard…” (26) amazed Knauft, but also portrays a stark division of labor within the
Gebusi society. Not only were they skilled, but also protective of their people, building Knauft and his family their own house, a house primarily made out of leaves which can support 100 degree temperatures and fourteen feet of rain. The Gebusi
understand efficiency, living within their means. For example, rather than raising pigs, paying to feed and fence them, they capture them, feed them, release them, and continue this cycle until they begin to sporadically meander back fatter and fatter.
Eventually they can slaughter the fattened pig without ever having to worry about caring for it. Economically, this method is incredible, keeping the pig in a limbo between domesticated and wild.
Unfortunately, Knauft then goes into things the Gebusi are unable to avoid such as poor infant mortality rate. Death is inevitable within the Gebusi, despite all their efforts in braving their harsh climate and lack of medical supplies.
Moving into the social world of the Gebusi, Knauft begins to break down enemies and clans. Clans are thought to “descend from a common blood” (66) and therefore should avoid intimacy. Despite many cultural differences, it is interesting the Gebusi
have adopted the negative perception of incest. The Gebusi have found a way to form marriages, settle disputes, and create their own take on a family tree. The social dynamic amongst these people has many similarities with western culture, proving the
bottom line of humans ultimately being emotional people who seek relationships of some sort. Along with these relationships comes all sorts of rituals, celebrations, and festivities.
Returning in 1998 the Gebusi have advanced immensely, granting all families a noticeable number of increased commodities. Along with this was a radical shift to Christianity, a huge leap from where they were a decade earlier condemning people for sorcery.
This large change in culture are the first signs in a more modernized Gebusi emerging. Along with religion, sports became to gain traction, focusing more time in energy in entertainment rather than just working, eating, and sleeping like before.
Eventually this ritual became futile towards their culture and more westernized forms of entertainment became prominent. That the only times the Gebusi men would get dressed up in their costumes was “for the government sponsored contest” (172)
emphasizes how stripped these people have become from their roots.
By 2013, the Gebusi have formed a full on multiethnic community, no longer seeing the river as a barrier but now “routes of connection” (200), truly embodying the Smithsonian nature of division of labor. Steadily population continued to increase as
accommodating for more individuals became easier.
This book is written about a very simple yet complex society which encompasses many different theorists. Smith is shown at the beginning with the specialization of labor within the survival process, some people are more equipped at shooting fish than
others. In order to survive in those harsh conditions, everyone had to become good at something than work cohesively as a group. Eventually the Gebusi became more advanced and started specializing in what they do best, while fostering trade agreements
other societies around them. This is economically sounder and saves a lot of time and effort. Ibn Khaldun’s form of Assabiya is absolutely found within the Gebusi, opening their arms to the outsiders of Knauft and their family. As the Gebusi became
more advanced they started to adopt a more complex religion which follows Durkheim’s model that all religion is the same but it molds to structure of the society in which it takes place. Knauft himself takes a on a Weber like role, not trying to
interfere or change their culture, but instead study and narrate it from a clear view. In conclusion, one is able to connect many parts of this book to many theorists, and that is what makes a society a society. They’re all different, and will never
strictly embody one’s vision of how a society ought to be run.
