    . . .

They DID have the right equipment/expertise on hand,
    so he'll be OK.

However consider - this sort of thing seems to be
ESCALATING quickly. It's usually "blacks", but not
always. In the old days you basically NEVER saw an
jock just drop dead on the court or field. Now it
seems an almost weekly news item.

    So, what's CHANGED ???

I have a nasty suspicion - those 'stimulant' "Sports
Drinks". Many have very large amounts of caffeine
and other substances that get you really pumping.
However TOO much can also make heart rhythm unstable
under stress. These products are USUALLY safe, but
for a small fraction with other predispositions they
can indeed boost chances of sudden arrest during
extreme exercise. Sorry, ain't NOTHIN' safe for
EVERYBODY all the time. Shit, too much water at
the wrong time can kill you too ...

The useful TRICK here is finding some way to
discover WHICH jocks are "predisposed". Might
be some genetic markers, some subtle sign in
the EKG. Can you STOP jocks from still swilling
down these 'boosters' ? Maybe not - it'd just
go underground anyhow, and probably involve even
WORSE substances. Still, you COULD at least
WARN them of how the bad stuff works. Then it's
    THEIR choice. Duty done.
