The biggie was "housing" - with many 65+ people STILL
paying on mortgages and such. Medical was runner-up.
We've all heard the stories about how the average Joe
in the USA can't even cover an unexpected expense of
even $500. All they earn, they spend. Forever on the
bleeding edge of ruin. Then they get old ....
Much of the rationale for SS/Medicare was as a work-around
for this quirk of human nature. People just can't bring
themselves to save money. Thanks to credit cards, most
spend their lives in DEBT. Always some shiny thing they
just HAVE to have RIGHT NOW, and there it all goes. Given
this maybe SS/MC deductions aren't nearly high ENOUGH ?
