Religion declines, money takes center stage: American values poll
79 percent find money very/extremely important in 2023
Religion drops: 62% in 1998 to 39% finding religion very important
. . .
Not SURE this is an all-around good trade.
Ben Franklin, in a cynical moment, noted how
horribly the average citizen behaved even
though they called themselves "Christians" -
and wondered how they'd act if they had NO
religion ......
Thing is, religion is often more than theology,
it's also Social Control ... a template of
behaviors and notions of good/bad that glue
societies together. In theory some of that
could be replaced by 'ethics', but that always
seems to become entangled with the popular
local religions.
